Wow. Genuinely surprised by the dislike of 3e and it’s clone, with 3.5 not far behind.

Seems like it was caught between the old guard of 1e/2e and the revolutionary forces of 4e. With everyone pissed at it.

Once it’s dead, in a battle between 4e and 1e I think I know who will win… 1e has strength in numbers!
I liked it when I played.... but today I don't see the point of doing so if (in my opinion) 5e is better in every single way.

And this is how one of the older editions win. While 4e and 5e struggle to maintain their starting scores, the rest are gradually growing unchecked. We'll have a new edition before this ends, and then we'll need to start over anyway!

I too have fallen out of love with 3E (happened before I even owned the 5E books, though they were out), I said a variation of the above about 2E when 3E came out (the latter is better in every single way) because in that moment it was what I wanted and needed from a D&D game. And yet, if I were to go back to play an older edition today, it would be 2E, not 3E. Thus, personally, I never say never anymore because I know my view can change.

If it were up to me, 3E would still be going strong in this thread and 3.5 would be on its way out along with 4E - just based on my feelings then and how it shapes my feelings now.

Yeah, I'm not trying to say 5e is strictly better, but for what I want out of a D&D game, 5e fits my profile better in every single way.
