I‘m due to run some 1e games in the near future for the first time since the 80’s. We normally play 5e and for the bulk of my group 5e is the first version that they have played. The common complaint from older players is the power creep and less distinct roles of each class. When I’ve recently read AD&D, I quickly realised that back in the day I was really just playing B/X and using the odd table from AD&D. I wanted to learn the rules by the book so I could teach my players but found the rules to be disjointed and unclear. Looking at sites like Dragonsfoot, I found countless arguments and disagreements about a lot of the rules, combat in particular. I set about the task of making my own edit of the rules, laying out the chapters like they are in 5e by combining parts of the PHB and DMG and translating Gygaxian into English. I’ve also include many footnotes when I think I am interpreting rather than rewording. It’s been a massive project but I really love the charm and innocence of the old rules. It’s kind of like reading an ancient tome and discovering hidden truths. Certainly, 5e is much more clearly written which it should be after nearly 50 years of the genre but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a better game. The recent changes to things like race, height and weight have really soured my opinion of 5e as well. I’m really looking forward to playing AD&D and hope I can recapture the magic of my early games. So for me, I’m currently voting yes for AD&D and no for 5e
