D&D 5E 5E Survivor - Deities (Part 1: Forgotten Realms) Selune Advances!

Yep. He stabbed him so hard he ascended.
I was incredulous when I read the novel in 1993.

I mean, okay, turns out Kelemvor's soul has been hidden by the intelligent sword that Cyric stabbed him with for the last decade, fine.

The sword was, it turns out, secretly Mask's avatar, okay.

Cyric breaks the sword, and Kelemvor's soul gets out. Not a problem.

Suddenly, without doing anything, Kelemvor has ascended to godhood -- wait, what the hell?

Kelemvor 19 -2 = 17 (Seriously, he became a god because he died on the end of Cyric's sword? What the hell?)

Savras 1 Yeah, why exactly does the Forgotten Realms need 3 main gods of magic? Because with Azuth, Savras, and Mystra, it's already crowded, and that's not even counting the non-human gods of magic, like Corellon.

One of the problems with the FR pantheon is that, over time, so many evil deities were killed or replaced by good/neutral deities in order to provide happy endings in novels. Evil death god Myrkul got replaced by neutral Kelemvor, neutral magic god old-Mystra got replaced by good-aligned new-Mystra, Mask started trending distinctly neutral, Bhaal got killed, Bane got killed, Moander got killed, etc etc etc. The pantheon was running out of bad guys. 5e has tried to bring a few of the old evil gods back, but after they've been kicked around so many times, it's hard to take them seriously. And there's so many neutral concepts represented by good gods. Milil and Oghma for instance - what's so inherently virtuous about literature and music? And Tymora? What, evil people can't be lucky too?

Anyway.

Look to the greeks for that. Art and Science were philosophically good because it elevated humanity.

Also, Tymora is one half of the goddess Tyche, who was split into Tymora and Beshaba as the twin goddesses of fortune and misfortune, hence the good fortune part of Tyche getting her benevolence. Her philosophy probably includes ideas like "sharing good fortune" and other ideas unpalatable to more selfish folks.
