Also not a fan of the inclusion of UA stuff, especially from way back. I don't know any tables who allow anything other than the most recent UA to be used, if that. It's Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Game.
Just so you know: I only include the most recent UA in these threads. If an UA subclass was later published in an official book, I will cite the book version. I do this to avoid confusion since almost all of the non-PHB subclasses were UA playtests at one point. Also not a fan of the inclusion of UA stuff, especially from way back. Some of them didn't make it to books for a reason... for exemple: The Sharpshooter is interesting, but it's lv 10+ abilities are way too weak for the level you get them at. The Fighter Scout isn't completely awful, but it feels like a Battlemaster with the Skilled feat instead of being its own unique thing that fulfills the role of scout. It's as good a reason to downvote something as any other. But I wonder if people would actually be able to tell me which ones were Unearthed Arcana and which ones weren't, if I didn't cite the sources up top.
That might be an interesting experiment for future threads. I could "accidentally" label something as Unearthed Arcana instead of Xanathar's or whatever, and see if people downvote it out of reflex without even checking.
Also: many of the Unearthed Arcana versions are superior to the ones that made it into print elsewhere. Just sayin'.
I question why the Knight is even included here, when it's clearly just a first pass at the Cavalier? Feels redundant to have both.EDIT: fixing my scores because Paul posted juuust before I did. @Paul Farquhar , yes, too many knight, but how about you just get rid of the "Knight otherwise non specified" first?![]()
The reasons you give for certain playtests not making it to final print are all matters of opinion, though. We can only speculate about WotC's decision-making process to get to that point. Some of them didn't make it to books for a reason... for exemple: The Sharpshooter is interesting, but it's lv 10+ abilities are way too weak for the level you get them at. I hadn't seen the Fighter Scout and HOLY MOLY! It's such a stinker! It's basically an awful Battlemaster with more skills... What were they thinking?
