D&D General 5e Wands with finite charges?

It's not possible to do a simple die roll in foundry? What else is needed?
Automating the decrementing die mechanic such as described is the difficulty :)
Lots of things can be done bare-bones, but one way that I get enjoyment out of running online is to have nice fancy stuff (as opposed to my in-person games, where I'd use a wet erase mat and markers- the nicest things there were the ocean of minis).

Yes, I'm mostly using wands with charges that can't be refilled at this point. Handing out a Wand of Magic Missile 7x/day or Fireball 7x/day or whatever felt like a bit too much.

How about this? Each time the wand is used, roll a d20. If you roll a 1, it has run out of magical energy. Roll another d20. If it's 2 - 20, the wand can be repaired (using the magic item creation rules, but with some sort of discount, maybe half the time and money? Maybe less? This could be tweaked on how lomg youd want the downtime to be). If it this second roll is a 1 as well, the wand is destroyed on the manner mentioned in the DMG. This would work with any charged magic item, although the more powerful items might be a bit more resilient.

This i think is an important observation.
but if you own a 1st level Cure Wounds wand with 50 charges... players will happily ping-ping-ping small heals to top everybody off after every fight, thus rendering the Short Rest / hit die mechanic obsolete.

Addressing the Original Post, it depends on what you want your game to feel like. It could make short rest healing unnecessary if you don't also take further steps as suggested in other posts up thread.

On the other hand, Wands Inc. is a completely valid option.

I did. Even made magic shop that has wand with "pay per use" and prepaid options. You are dirt poor but need that Cure wounds wand? No problem, Wands Inc got you covered. I use old 3.5 prices for wands, so CW is 750/50 , so it's 15gp+3.75 gp vat + 1.25 lease fee, so nice round 20 gp per use and 10% of wand value as deposit.

It works ok, since it cost's them cash to use, they don't over use them.

I guess one important note is, at least as of 5e14 and A5E, there are no Cure Wounds wands. Ofc you can "make" one but.. that's not on the docket. And I'm not using the 5e24 magic item "create any spell as a wand etc" rules. I was a player during the CLW wand era, not looking to recapture that... I just find it a drag that my players pass up wands (and other potentially finite items) because they don't have the attunement slots to use them.

My groups also tend to take a couple short rests per long rest, or more depending on the situation. I decouple sleep from long rests, so a group might go a couple days without a LR and while that exhausts some of their class features, it gives more weight to magic items- that's something that I like, and sort of miss from earlier editions. Character features were of less import, but you'd find awesome magic items that'd really effect how you played. Anyway, that's sort of a tangent.

I appreciate all your input!

I've written a macro to do this that works for Foundry v11.315, dnd5e v3.3.1 and ose v1.9.3.
Those are the systems I use, but if there is demand I could be persuaded to add support for more.
Very kind of you! I run using the Level Up A5E foundry system, it's not the same but I can ask on that Discord about getting this to work on there.
