So later, when Slovenus kicks the bucket. The party is asked to attend the reading of the will. Slovenus has left them something either:

A). Very powerful and desired by others. Ensuing encounters of various baddies. . .

I'd already planned on this. Not necessarily something very powerful, but definitly desired by others. Slovenus is going to leave them his workbooks/journal from when he was an adventurer.

D). Not magical at all, but treasured by Slovenus's b**ch queen of a daughter.

That would work too, I think I'll go with that as well.

The other NPCs I had planned to introduce were Slov's housekeeper and a friend from his adventuring days. This friend could possibly lead them into GG (mentioned earlier)

Come to think of it, there would also be a lawyer at the reading of the will.

How about having them run into a plot intiated by a group of Mage-killers(the PrC from magic of faerun, if you don't have the book use assassins with that spacific agenda). It's a mageocracy, there is bound to be groups of political dissidents. Any way have the pc's foil an assissination thus earning the hatred of the guild, this paves the way for all sorts of future problems.

possible, they could interupt something while chasing the cat - maybe in a back alley, or in a crowd.

party chases cat into warehouse, warehouse is owned by a wealthy smuggler, guards (who are hidden until someone actually enters the warehouse) ask pc's why they are there. hard to beleive that the intruders chased a cat into the warehouse just as a big shipment of stolen goods was about to be dropped off but if your group can talk their way out of it great. if not, enter a potentially recurring villian (the smuggler and his merc forces)

What if while chasing the cat through the brothel they encounter an important political figuer do some very bad things to one of the employees. This could blow up on the PC's in any number of ways. The vip could send lackies to shut them up, the mage-killers could find out the pc's have dirt on this guy and try to kidnapp them, The vip could try to bribe them, the pc's might get higfh and mighty and try to go to the authorities with the info or even the vip's wife.

Ok, this may not be large scale but the pc's will hate it. Have the cat run into a pen with live stock, any kind will do, and have it just sit in an open area, so as to lure the PC's in after it. When they get into the pen have the Bull/alpha male get poed. Then the whole herd flips out, the cat gets out of dodge, and mayhem ensues.

Never under estimate the power of normal animals, when it comes to challenging PC's.

I was having a slow night DMing once and one smart alick PC decided to go Hunting. Mind you he had no skills in hunting or tracking and could barely use a bow. His take on the whole thing was i'm mid leveled how tough can a deer be, one shot and it'll be dead. So he see a "large Buck" and shots it for a massive 3 damage. He alomst got killed a couple others got gored real bad, they did have venison for dinner, but they never again took for granted that type of in counter. It's actually be come one of the most infamous examples of DMing in our group.
