D&D 5E 5th Level Monk Question

So a 5th level monk with a 16 DEX, wielding a quaterstaff can attack three times at +6 doing 1d8+3 twice (main attack) and then +6 doing 1d6+3 (bonus action).

Using Flurry of Blows, she could take a 2nd bonus action at +6 doing 1d6+3.

Is that right?

Sort of. The monk doesn't take a 2nd Bonus Action. You only get one Bonus Action per turn. However, the Flurry of Blows allows you to attack twice (using unarmed) with your Bonus Action, rather than attacking only once (using unarmed) with your Bonus Action.

No.

As I recall...
- The extra Martial Arts blow is a bonus action that only allows an unarmed attack.
- The Flurry of Blows is also a bonus action that only allows unarmed attacks.

So since you can only perform one bonus action during your turn, you can only do one or the other. Neither allow you to use a weapon other than your unarmed attack.

Yep, this is frequently missed. I know we did it wrong in my 1st 5e game. Flurry of Blows does not stack with the martial arts bonus attack...as both are bonus actions.

You're choices are:

A) make one quarterstaff attack and one bonus quarterstaff attack at the weapon's damage or your monk damage (your choice) using either STR or DEX as the damage modifier
B) make one quarterstaff attack and one bonus action to attack unarmed using your monk damage dice, using either STR or DEX
C) make one quarterstaff attack at it's damage or your monk damage dice (your choice) and spend 1 ki for flurry of blows to get 2 unarmed attacks as a bonus action using your monk damage dice, using either STR or DEX

At 5th level, you get an extra attack, so +1 quarterstaff attack to each of the above. But not more bonus actions.

So, OP (and I think we all agree, according to your question)

To tidy things up,

Yes.

A 5 level monk can attack 3 times (2 attacks from her action + 1 attack (unarmed) from her bonus action) OR 4 times (2 times from her action + 2 attacks (unarmed) from her bonus action IF she spends 1 ki point to do so)

All attacks can be unarmed or up to 2 can be a weapon other than unarmed (such a staff)
