A bow and wands

Can a character hold a wand for easy access while shooting a bow without penalty? Such as the wand in the same hand as the bow, or even in their teeth?also, since a wand is basically a stick, just about anythign can be made into a wand right?
How about a wooden spoon, with the activation word being "Mmmm" hehe

Not in our Game.

We actually had this question come up in our game.

In the end we couldn't find a rule that prevented it, but common sense told us that you could not do this.

As we saw it holding a wand in your teeth would mess up the draw of the bow, and trying to hold it in the hand that holds or draws the bow will end up messing with your aim. So we said no you couldn't do this.

However we do allow vaguely wand like items to be made into wands. I hadn't considered the spoon concept.... Hmmm sounds like my Arcane Trickster needs to make a new wand. That way next time he gets captured he'll have at least one wand left....

yeah, that was his concept, noone would steal his wands if they looked like wooden spoons.

Going with that, what is the general rule on allowing what you can make wands out of?

The issue wouldn't be pulling the wand out i.e. quickdraw (which we apply to any item) but once you have the wand in hand you want to keep it that way. Don't want to drop it (free action, but move to pick up) or put it away (move action).

Actually, I could see holding it in the same hand you draw your string with. I'm basing it on the size of a wand being close to the size of a pen or pencil, maybe a little longer, but it seems you could simply hold against your hand with your thumb, and all it takes to pull an arrow are two to three fingertips.

I would dearly love to see someone "field-test" these ideas. If a player in one of my games insisted he could, a pencil, bow and arrow would be produced, and the emergency room on speed-dial!

Holding a wand in your teeth will get it ripped out when you release the string. Holding it in your firing hand will at the least interfere with your ability to draw an arrow, knock it, pull the bow, aim and release, not to mention the fact that trying to hold your thumb tightly around the wand will prevent you from releasing the string cleanly. Hell, honestly, I never really hold the actual bow with a closed hand when aiming, but that's probably just a bad habit.

If the player is that keen on holding onto his wand, put a leather loop on it and wrap it around his wrist.

No, my friend opened a boobie trapped chest - had a magic missile booby trap set by goblin sappers. That is what hit him.

Simply put a cord on the wand, so that it won't be permanently dropped... It'll still take a move action to get back, of course, but no worries about loosing the item

That depends on HOW you hold it in your mouth. You're thinking sideways, I'm thinking longways would do the trick. Make the item with an appropriatly humerous shape for extra ribbing.

The hand yopu draw the string with is also the hand you load the arrow in with.

Dex check to load your bow....oh...and Dex check to hold ontop that wand while firing too...
