A Clash of Earth and Sea (El Jefe Judging) [See Part II]

OOC: Looks like Planus is within 30ft so his last shot would hit o1 at AC 23 for 8 damage. I think he can target the lower right corner of the ogre and so avoid the shooting into melee penalty.

Round 2 Begins
Jack steps to G10 and stabs ineffectively at the Merrow.

Planus moves forward 40' to K11, a rate made possible by his Longstrider spell*. Without the precise shot feat, Planus's shot fails. Edit: Planus hits for 8 damage.

As he moves up behind Opale (to N11) Iggy reloads his crossbow.

[Ducane is up]

ooc:* Let me know if Charlarn has some sort of speed boost going on, as I almost failed to recall this about Planus.

ooc: OK, had to look this one up. Here it is:

If your target (or the part of your target you’re aiming at, if it’s a big target) is at least 10 feet away from the nearest friendly character, you can avoid the -4 penalty, even if the creature you’re aiming at is engaged in melee with a friendly character.

Based on the quote, Planus hits the Merrow for 8 damage. (Reflected in the edit above.)

Charlarn of Phyrah: male human cleric 3/ranger 2

OOC: I don't think Charlarn has any speed enhancements now.

Charlarn moves down the halway behind Ducane and Jack (to I12). He says to the human warrior, "I'm going to heal you. Don't move around too much." The cleric hangs his weapon from his belt and reaches into his haversack.

AC 17
HP 32/32

HP 24 / 36, AC 17 (18 vs o3, 22/23 vs movement AoOs)

Seeing that the nearest merrow is only an annoyance now, Ducane completely ignores Charlarn and tries to tumble (but fails with 11) to E13 and hit the o3, but misses (12).

OOC: Well, the dagger-merrow won't get an AoO at least, if he's using Total Defense. Don't we also get cover against the spear merrow from o1?

[sblock=Cover Rules]

Cover
To determine whether your target has cover from your ranged attack, choose a corner of your square. If any line from this corner to any corner of the target’s square passes through a square or border that blocks line of effect or provides cover, or through a square occupied by a creature, the target has cover (+4 to AC).

When making a melee attack against an adjacent target, your target has cover if any line from your square to the target’s square goes through a wall (including a low wall). When making a melee attack against a target that isn’t adjacent to you (such as with a reach weapon), use the rules for determining cover from ranged attacks.

Low Obstacles and Cover
A low obstacle (such as a wall no higher than half your height) provides cover, but only to creatures within 30 feet (6 squares) of it. The attacker can ignore the cover if he’s closer to the obstacle than his target.

Cover and Attacks of Opportunity
You can’t execute an attack of opportunity against an opponent with cover relative to you.

Cover and Reflex Saves
Cover grants you a +2 bonus on Reflex saves against attacks that originate or burst out from a point on the other side of the cover from you. Note that spread effects can extend around corners and thus negate this cover bonus.

Cover and Hide Checks
You can use cover to make a Hide check. Without cover, you usually need concealment to make a Hide check.

Soft Cover
Creatures, even your enemies, can provide you with cover against ranged attacks, giving you a +4 bonus to AC. However, such soft cover provides no bonus on Reflex saves, nor does soft cover allow you to make a Hide check.

Big Creatures and Cover
Any creature with a space larger than 5 feet (1 square) determines cover against melee attacks slightly differently than smaller creatures do. Such a creature can choose any square that it occupies to determine if an opponent has cover against its melee attacks. Similarly, when making a melee attack against such a creature, you can pick any of the squares it occupies to determine if it has cover against you.

Total Cover
If you don’t have line of effect to your target he is considered to have total cover from you. You can’t make an attack against a target that has total cover.

Varying Degrees of Cover
In some cases, cover may provide a greater bonus to AC and Reflex saves. In such situations the normal cover bonuses to AC and Reflex saves can be doubled (to +8 and +4, respectively). A creature with this improved cover effectively gains improved evasion against any attack to which the Reflex save bonus applies. Furthermore, improved cover provides a +10 bonus on Hide checks.

ooc: While it's horribly complicated, I'd have to agree the Ogres manage to line up in exactly the wrong way... Dagger Merrow is Providing "soft cover" from attacks by Spear Merrow. No AOO v. Ducane.

Round 2 Continues
Ducane rushes in to E13, outmaneuvering the stupid Merrow to their great consternation. His attack misses, but he puts them in an awkward position.

The spear wielding Merrow yells something to his fellow in Giant and awaits a response. [Sblock=Translation]"Move, you idiot!"[/sblock

The dagger wielding Merrow takes a 5' step away from Ducane and swings at him. As he steps aside, the spear wielding Merrow stabs at Jack. Both miss.

[Opale goes here.]

[Charlarn goes here: May change stated action as the person he wanted to heal moved away.]

Jack pauses a moment to see which direction Ducane moves in, so that he can team up with the dwarf to exploit an opening in the merrow's defense.

OOC: Next round, Jack is going to delay his action until just after Ducane's initiative.

HP 24 / 36, AC 17 (18 vs. o3)

Round 3: Ducane steps to E12 and takes a swing at the o3, but misses (12).

"That won't help you too much! I need to return some pain!"
, he says to the spear-merrow in Giant.

OOC: What dwarf?
