A DANCE WITH DRAGONS

by George R.R. Martin

First Serial, British, Translation, and Performance: Aurous, Inc., 212-628-9729

October

Fiction

Dubbed “the American Tolkien” by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin’s monumental cycle of epic fantasy, “A Song of Ice and Fire,” has earned him international acclaim. Now the #1 New York Times bestselling author delivers the fifth book in his spellbinding landmark series-as both familiar faces and surprising new forces vie for a foothold in a fragmented empire.

In the aftermath of a colossal battle, the future of the Seven Kingdoms hangs in the balance once again-beset by newly emerging threats from every direction. In the east, Daenerys Targaryen, the last scion of House Targaryen, rules with her three dragons as queen of a city built on dust and death. But Daenerys has three times three thousand enemies, and many have set out to find her. Yet, as they gather, one young man embarks upon his own quest for the queen, with an entirely different goal in mind. To the north lies the mammoth wall of ice and stone-a structure only as strong as those guarding it. There, Jon Snow, 998th Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, will face his greatest challenge yet. For he has powerful foes, not only within the Watch, but also beyond, in the land of the creatures of ice. And from all corners, bitter conflicts soon re-ignite, intimate betrayals are perpetrated, and a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, will face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Some will fail, others will grow in the strength of darkness. But in a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics will lead inevitably to the greatest dance of all…

Aside from wanting to see what happens next and hoping some of the nasty people in the series get their just deserts, what I'm really hoping for is the revelation that SPOILERS Jon Snow is in fact that lost son of Rhaegar Targayen and Lyanna Stark. SPOILERS

Ooooh, October is so far away... :(

Now that Martin has given me time to catch up with the series, I suppose I'm going to have to buy this one in hardcover. That should give me a hernia.

I was about 2/3 the way through AFFC before I heard that rumor. It certainly makes sense in many ways.

I don't want to pour too much cold water on this notice, but I doubt it's true. GRR Martin posted the following on January 1, 2008 (http://www.georgerrmartin.com/if-update.html):
I probably won't update this page again for quite a long while, so let me close by saying once again that when A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is finished, I will post that news here. The moment I finish the book, I will log on and make the announcement. You guys will be the third ones to know, right after Parris and my publishers.

He hasn't posted anything else. So I doubt the book is even done let alone ready for editing. Also, there is NOTHING new in the blurb. It's a generic post with nothing a person couldn't state after having read the THIRD book in the series, let alone A Feast fro Crows.

Dubbed “the American Tolkien” by Time magazine . . .

I've always wondered if people who read and enjoy both Martin and Tolkien, among my peers on EN World (rather than the spin doctors from Time magazine), believe this statement to be true to a high degree?
