knight and samurai are the same thing only seperated by time and distance .

...and by a massive disparity in their access to raw materials. THAT is the crucial difference.

It really is a silly premise. No disrespect intended. I mean silly by that samurai and knight in their iconic representation would never have a way to do battle and speculating on the outcome is mostly futile.

I guess we'll just have to go back to more serious topics...such as how our halfling bards can min/max their way into the half-elven rogue's bedroom while at the same plotting out their future PrC's in order have the right prereqs by the time they hit epic level.

Better comparison:

US Marine is comprable to a Spartan soldier.

And I'd only go with the Marine because they have a gun.

Basically, knight and samurai are VERY similar: Noble royal warrior caste of refinement, a mortal ideal to attain.

It's a bit of human nature, since nearly all societies have these sort of pariahs, though they're probably more often religious figures than combatant ones. Exception here because both medieval Japan and medieval Europe were hotbeds of clan warfare.

Not sure I'd go quite that far, the Spartans were trained from childhood for their roll.

Besides Marines are typically straight. :p

A better comparison would be the Roman Legionaire, both are professional campaigners.

Nah, there are too many chicks who dig the uniform, trust me. I know from personal experience. Ahh to be young & on libo in Melbourne again...but I digress. lol

You'll have to talk to a sailor for the "other" point of view...I'm sure there's a Wog Queen around here somewhere. ;)

Q: Why do they have marines on navy vessels?
A: Because sheep are too obvious

Aaanyway... before the beatings start for that bad joke.
My money would be on the chinese of the same era :)

Interstingly enough you never see folks actually make those jokes while they are actually in the same room as a Marine. ;)

...Seriously though, it's to keep the squids from meeting on the fantail. :D

I voted for the Knight because of a few factors: the height advantage, and the relatively thick armor and shield. However, I would argue it would still be a difficult fight.

I thought the essay was quite interesting, and I would not mind seeing that essay and others like it in a good collection. It would be a welcome addition to my private library.
