A familiar Mimic

So, I was working on putting together a campaign, and I was reading some other campaign that involved a very high level mimic as an enemy.

And I often have thought that it would be really cool if you could have a mimic as familiar, as it blurs the line between person, place and thing. So I am wondering, what kind of tinkering would I have to do to make it a possibility from the 3.5e/Pathfinder rule sets?

A mimic is so much more powerful than a typical familiar-- even improved familiar-- just by virtue of its HD and intelligence.

A fairly straightforward alternative might be to just treat the mimic as a cohort, gained with the Leadership feat at 6th level. This would basically be done instead of taking Improved Familiar, and would also free up your Summon Familiar class feature at first level for some other alternate class feature.

Of course, a cohort is not mechanically the same as a familiar, so that might not be a good solution for you.
