A few pcgen questions...

I've (thankfully) got the 2.7.3 version that was released several days ago.

What's more, I think I've finally gotten the hang of the program!

At any rate, I've got a few questions.

I was trying to input a paladin and ran into some problems.

1. Mounted combat won't make itself available to me regardless of what I do. Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong? I have the requisite Ride skill points.

2. I can't seem to raise cross-class skills above 4 ranks at lvl 5 (that's 8 skill points) as it seems that PCGen is reading skills spent as equivalent ranks, thus giving me a 'max ranks for your level' message.

3. The OpenRpg export function rocks! Okay, this isn't a problem really, just something I noticed. I was wondering though... how easy would it be to add another openrpg template to the program, namely one that inputs data to the openrpg sheet I've made for myself? Just wondering.

Thanks in advance,

Femerus

1) PCGen 2.73 has a bug that messes up availability of Prestige Classes, even if you have the prerequisite skills. This might also affect it so that you can't take a feat that uses skills as a prerequisite. It is a bug and it was fixed in version 3.0.

2) A cross-class skill has a maximum rank that is 1/2 of what a class skill has. A class skill can be 3+character level. In your case max rank for a class skill would be 8. So a cross-class skill can only be a max rank of 4.

3) Yes, PCGen does rock. I don't know about the import that you want to try. Sorry.

To fix your problem with the 2.73 bug mentioned above you might want to download their latest production version 3.0. However, version 3.0 has a reduced number of available sources (No FRCS, SW, CoC, etc.) So you won't be able to access those sources unless you install right on top of your 2.73 installation (which has those sources.) In addition, version 2.72 did not have this bug. If you have a copy of that one then just use that specific version.

Once again let me say, PCGen does Rock.

Well... that answers that. Thanks! Looks like I'll need to get 3.0.

...

Seriously? Bah! That was unexpected. So does that mean that a character must necessarily be 6th lvl before taking the hunter of the dead PrC, as no standard classes have Knowledge: Undead as a class skill? Grrrr.

About this... I heard there was an issue dealing with the old data .dll files and version 3. Has that been resolved, or was I just hallucinating?

Thanks,

Bards, Loremasters, Wizards and folks who have the Knowledge domain have all Knowledge skills as class skills. That's just the SRD stuff...there may be others who have that as well.

Thanks,

The data files for version 2.71 and higher had been changed to use the new format which has tags for almost everything.

Version 3.0 reads those files fine. I did have problems with .lst files that were earlier than version 2.71. I tried version 3.0 with the 2.73 files and everything seems to work fine. Of course I haven't tested everything so YMMV.

Well.

More experimentation = more questions!

One of the main reasons that I've shied away from PCgen in the past is the whole process of equipping my character. That being said, I've decided to plunge in and try it anyways.

So where are the magic weapons?

Sure, I've found all sorts of unique stuff, but the actual +1 through +5 standard weapons simply are nowhere to be found.

What to do? Is there some sort of feature through which I can make them? I understand that having every single possible combination would be nearly impossible, but I'm also sure that I'm not the first person who wants to equip his Paladin with a freakin' +1 longsword.

Help me rhonda!

edit: dang misspellings. so much for that english degree!

Hmm... I suppose I could blow a feat on skill focus and get some more Knowledge: Undead points that way.

This will increase your total bonus-but PrC prereqs (and feat prereqs, etc.) are all based on ranks, which the Skill Focus feat does not supply ...

Most PrC's are designed to be taken no earlier than 5th or 6th level. There's a reason for this, but I can't remember what it was.

Magic Weaposn In PCGen

Ah If you haven't figured out about the magic weapons +1 to +5 you haven't explored the Settings yet.

Its easy all you do is go to Settings>PCGen>Equipment>Equipment AutoCreation. You'll see choices for racialy sized armors, adamantium/mithril/darkwood materials, +1 to +5 magic, etc. Just make sure the +1 to +5 is checked, along with any others that yoyu want. Then go unload all your sources and then load them again. After that when you go into inventory you'll have a choice of +1 to +5 for every weapon. THis does slow-up the initial load of sources as PCGen has to generate all those weapons.

Also you can just right click on a base item and customize it to your hearts content. Just add masterwork, then a magical plus and then anything else you want.

You probably should also explore the settings a little more to see what else you can do.

Don't worry I did the same thing when I first started using PCGen.
