As an aside, I've calculated an average gnome's ability stats (all 10s):
Str 4 Dex 12 Con 6 Int 12 Wis 10 Cha 10
To be honest, I haven't given them any advantage for melee combat.
Not a big deal, but it isn't good enough for Gnomish melee combatants.
Giving them more strength, or less... well...
I still want them to be tiny. And that means a huge strength penalty, as well as a discouraging reason not to go into combat.
