Honestly, I love the idea of a familiar being whatever. Have it be a potato or even a non-Euclidian geometric shape. Something weird and strange and magical.

An unpleasant odour! Or even a pleasant one. "Sure, he's an evil sorcerer whose undead minions have slaughtered whole villages, but he smells of vanilla and ... is it a hint of cardamom?"
