A little black triangle?

Does anyone now how much an obsidian(Black right?) triangle would cost? It has 2-3 inch long edges. It's for flavour, my monk would like it because of the simplisity it symbolises, the unquestioning black, and the nigh indistructability(If you hit it on the point only mithral, magic and other like that should dent it(? ya know the wide and small pressure)and if it hits the floor pointy bit that goes in) so what do you say?

Far be it from me to bring real world physics into a game, but I find it interesting that you mention the 'nigh indestructibility" of obsidian.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with your DM saying that obsidian is indestructible in your his world.

He should be clear, however, that this is different from the real world. Obsidian is volcanic glass, and as such can be very hard but also very brittle. It will hold a very fine edge, even better than flint, but it shatters easily, especially if used against less brittle materials like steel.

Obsidian is really cool. If your not careful, you'll cut yourself real good. It doesn't look sharp ar first. Trick of light. And Obsidian will break, but more importantly it will peal. The sharp edge doesn't stay that way under constant use. But luckily, it's realy easy to sharpen again.

Obsidian may be incredibly sharp, but it's also incredibly brittle compared to iron or steel. I would check for chipping or outright shattering of obsidian weapons, every time they are used. Against a defender in metal armor (or a monster whose natural armor is comparable, such as a bullette, dragon, or gorgon), I would make the probability for breakage pretty high.

The most practical use for obsidian edges would be one-use-only arrows and shurikens. However, like hollow-point bullets that do extra damage against targets of flesh & blood, obsidian arrowhead and shurikens might shatter when striking metal armor rather than penetrating, despite their incredible sharpness.

I'm thinking if you use a hammer the energy will spread through the Pyramid, or affect the steel, and struct on the flat part(sharp down) it would dig into the ground.

Huh? No, remember it's brittle.

Why is all this important? I thought It was just for flavour?

Right, if it's just for flavor, then no need to make up (or take into account) a bunch of special rules. Heck, it can be made out of rock candy, if "flavor" is all he's concerned about. :p

But if he wants a special advantage because of the incredible sharpness of osbidian, then he should also be subject to the disadvantages of obsidian. And, really, the disadvantages of obsidian pretty much outweigh its advantages. Otherwise, it would be the norm for surgeons to use obsidian scalpels, and you'd see obsidian combat blades for sale in those cool knife catalogs that are available through the mail.
