A mass version of phantom steed?

I know I saw this somewhere but I can't remember the name nor the source. I think it is a fourth or fifth level sorcerer/wizard spell that creates horses almost identically to phantom steed, but it creates more of them.

You're probably thinking of regal procession on page 172 of the Spell Compendium. It's a third level paladin and sorc/wiz spell.

It's more like a mass version of mount--the summoned horses aren't as fast as phantom steeds.

In Greyhawk (at least in my Greyhawk), it's called Otto's Regal Procession. The spell fits his bombastic sense of grandeur.

Well, we have chain spell but that's not exactly the same thing. While It would be nice to speed things up and save spell space I don't think I'd want all spells being able to be made into mass versions.

It seems to me the intent of the ethereal mount spell was to summon mounts on the ethereal plane, perhaps ONLY on the ethereal plane. While the spell makes no mention of it not functioning anywhere else, it is a replica of a third level spell in mass for only 1 level increase. Anyone think that is a problem?

Well, teleport is available as a 5th level spell for wizards, sorcerers, and those with the travel domain list. At 9th of casting this lets a part of 4 (caster + 3 others) travel up to 900 miles in a few seconds.

Mass phantom steed, assumed to be 4th level, for the same party and 9th level of casting would let them travel across land with steeds whose base speeds are 180. While hustling that is about 36 miles per hour (very roughly) for up to maybe 6 hours (1 hour = 0 damage, 2 hours = 1, 3 hours = 3, 4 hours = 7, 5 hours = 15, 6 hours = 31) which gives about 216 miles or if you start walking the steeds after 5 hours then you get 252 miles.

Each of these has their own unique problems above and beyond what is listed here but using this I certainly do not see any big problem with a mass phantom steed being 4th level. This actually tells me that regular phantom steed would probably be better off in a 2nd level slot. The only problem would be at higher levels getting a high fly speed for long periods of time but since the mount is so easy to hit and has such low hit points this may be a self correcting problem.

I posted this before, and the general consensus was that a phantom steed can run, and without ever fatiguing mind you. So its actually about 82 mph for as long as the duration lasts.

Whichever way the DM wants to go with it of course :)

For transportation I like the idea of seconds of travel over 8 hours of riding if I really need to go somewhere.
