A mystery race ?

I like Drow! They stack nicely on the end of a longspear. ;P

I like drow as an enemy but drow PCs should be a special exception not a PHB race. The MM write up will give lots of options for special PCs. Maybe Lizardfolk or changeling too, but I hope one of those two makes it into the PHB

Clues to the mystery race

In regard to the "mystery character" -- Note that it appeared in an alphabetical list of characters by race between eladrin and elf. Given the likely null likelihood of the psionic race of elan making PHB1 -- What other race could fit that gap? My best guess would favor an "eladrinkin" race -- a half-elf race whose non-human ancestry comes from the eladrin race rather than the new elf race. The introduction of this race would suggest a plan to purge the half-races that cannot be given new names, with the result that half-orcs are gone. The removal of half-orcs would leave room for another "strong" race. Here is my proposed list of 4E races:

Human: Iconic is Jozan, a male human cleric.

Eladrinkin: Iconic is Alhandra, a female eladrinkin paladin.

Dwarf: Iconic is Tordek, a male dwarf fighter. +Con, --Cha

Eladrin: Iconic is Mialee, a female eladrin wizard. +Cha, -Con

Elf: Iconic is Soveliss, a male human ranger. +Wis, -Int

Goliath: Iconic is a warlord, on the basis that new races
get the new classes. +Str, -Dex

Halfling: Iconic is Lidda, a female halfling rogue. +Dex, -Str

Tiefling: Iconic is a warlock, on the basis that this class
is best associated with the tiefling race, leaving the warlord
class for the goliath or other "strong guy" race. +Int, -Wis

Assuming that WotC intends a balance of genders among
the iconics, either the goliath is male and the tiefling is
female or vice versa.

I think the obvious mystery race hasn't been mentioned yet.

It will of course be Myconids.

What's not to love? They're great to have on adventures. They are fun guys...
Myconids rock!!

Hang on... that could be a way to salvage the OotS character, which otherwise risks sudden extintion* due to lack of Bards in the PHB! :D

Illumians maybe? This would give a human "option" along with your "standard" human. I also thought I saw something on their inclusion in 4E somewhere.

I don't know that drow would count as a separate race from elves, and while I would like other elf options (such as wild, wood, and gold/gray), I don't know that I'd want drow as a standard PC race. I blame Salvatore- not for Drizzt, but for portraying the drow of Menzoberranzan as decadent Machiavellian connivers and manipulators that thrive on chaos and yet live by their own twisted set of "laws." I just don't see PC's coming from that kind of society, unless you play one like a Bregan D'arthe member, and even they don't mind killing and other dastardly deeds (they, however, simply derive no passion or pleasure from it).

Or it could be the mystery race is duergar dwarf. I could live with duergar as PC's- they're just lawful evil dwarves, not exactly a true antithesis of everything that is dwarven. I would like to see dwarf options such as FR's gold dwarves (take a hit in Dex rather than Con, makes for good paladin and cleric dwarves), but again, I don't think such a race would be the "mystery" race.

Changelings and Lizardfolk! I would prefer changelings myself, but Lizardfolk are a better fit since it seems we lost half orcs as our big brute race. I hope it's not kobolds as this would kill their popularity.
