A mystery race ?

I'm planning to go with Human, Kenku, Dromites and Lizardfolk as core races in the PHB. Basically, I'm going on the premise that the major species come from each animal kindom (plus insects). Sahuagin and Kuo-Toa are going to represent fish and amphibians, but I don't really see them working as PC races.

I like that idea.

Might I suggest Bullywugs or Sivs as the amphibian races, both of which would be suitable for PC play.

after reading another thread, i realized that the mistery race could be Tauren...

Aren't Tauren basically Minotaurs? Just another take on them, just as Dragonlance Minotaurs are another take.

I am now with confidence guessing that the mystery race will be half-dragons. Why?
I thought when I looked at the PHB cover that the guy in back was a tiefling. Then someone pointed out that the girl had horns. I said to myself, why would they put two tieflings on the cover of the new book? Then I noticed that the guy had a reptilian tail. Hmmm... he looks draconic. Later I was flipping through the MM and I noticed the picture of the red dragon. Swept backed horns? Check. Yellow eyes? Check. Jutting chin? Check. Dragon tail? Check. Red? Check. Look at the picture and you be the judge.

The Desert of Desolation setlist suggests that it'll be drow.

Of the non-human humanoids we have:

2 Tieflings
2 Drow
2 Halflings
3 Dwarves
2 Elves
1 Shifter

On top of that, there's a drow in the D&D Starter set with the green dragon, along with 3 other PC-types.

Four flavors of elf, here we go...

This makes me sad. I am sure drow lovers will rejoice, but having half of the first core rulebook being elves is just bland. :(

Where do you get that? If just being present in the set is an indication, then we'd have ogres, too, since they're in that set. Most of the miniatures presented are antagonist monsters, of which the drow is most likely one.

So, yeah, I see no indication that drow is definitely in.

I culled the list to include only humanoids with a possibility of being PC races (sahaugin, for instance, were left out). Miniatures with "humanoid race" + "profession" were selected for, and that's the list I got.

It's always possible that WotC is intentionally leaving the mystery race out of miniatures products, but the presence of drow in Desert of Desolation -and- their presences as one of the four PCs facing off against the Green Dragon suggests otherwise...

Kobolds. Bring back their 2nd ed ability to always be attacked last.

That's a great idea for a PC ability that a monster could never have. Players would cry foul if they were forced into attacking the grey ooze next to the kobold, but it's exactly the sort of ability that would be awesome for a teensy PC race to have.
