Optional rules are default rules, got it. We have what, 3 default rules for resting? Firearms both exist and don't exist by default. Schrodinger's firearms!!

The default is explicitly called out as what is in the monster block. They it says you can OPT to change it. Changing the monster's default alignment is an optional rule that the DM can use.

Yea that last part there is the problem. No need to even bring it up. The question wasn't "Does D&D work well as a game with relative morality as compared to absolute morality WHEN LOOKING AT CORE RULES?"
