A perfect Saturday...

Of course, a perfect Saturday is gaming with the gaming group. But, it that can't happen?

I've come to realize that at the end of the day, one of the most satisfying ways for me to spend free time is to buy a 2-liter bottle of diet pepsi + something unhealthy to eat, go home, and watch a marathon of something on TV. Perhaps sports, perhaps the Star Wars or LotR trilogy, perhaps Star Trek episodes, perhaps bad TV. Whatever. The point is to be alone (I generally do this when my wife as at the in-laws), relax, and enjoy some small comforts (the most essential of which are a comfy couch and a remote control).

Now, a lot of people would probably think doing that would be borish, unintellectual, unhealthy, and/or unsociable.

I like doing outdoor activites enough I suppose, and I get out on my bicycle when I can (Moscow isn't the best place for it). WHen I travel I love to walk in the mountains or explore exotic cities. I'm not much for water sports like boating or sailing and I don't live in a great place for it.

It probably would be fair to characterize myself as an unsocial person. I don't like weddings, parties, dancing, etc. Besides gaming, about as social as I get is meeting a friend or two and going to a bar or something (or just sit home and chat), or going out with my wife.

Is this typical gamer/uber-geek syndrome, or this normal (or both?)

sounds like a nice relaxing day to me too.

but like you i'd prefer to take a hike in the woods with family/friends/the dog.

or veg out in front of some computer game.

social events are nice. but they drain my batteries.

Everybody needs a some "me" time. I've been on vacation this week and have been busting my hump doing odd jobs around the house (cleaning the gutters, cleaning the windows, raking leaves, blah, blah, blah), but not today. Today I'm doing whatever I want. I'll catch up on some reading, play some computer games, and I"ll watch season 4 of The Simpsons on DVD.

Don't get me wrong, I like the outdoors and going to social events, but every once in a while (when my son is with his friends and my wife is with hers) I like to have a day of just reading and watching TV with no one around to bother me.

Alone time

Most of my time is "alone time". I'm single, don't have any friends to hang out with, and live 6 hours away from family (ok, I have a cat, so I'm never really ALONE alone whan I'm home :) ). But, luckily, I was also an only child, so I enjoy my alone time alot. I have two favorite things to do:
A) Go to the 24 hour grocery stores and take my time to walk around and check out everything. Ok, no deli, fish, or take out, but that's ok with me. I'll spend 1-2 hours just walking around seeing what's new. Plus, one of the stores plays great 80's music at night. :D Also, I walk to the stores, so depending on what time it is I can see all kinds of wildlife like deer, rabbits, coyotes, cranes, and ducks. It's pretty peaceful and quiet.
B) Now that it's cold, I love to snuggle under covers with the cat, have a cup of tea or hot chocolate, & a good book. I can spend hours like that.

It is funny that yuo post this, for I alwasy strive for ideal Saturdays, and never get them. My ideal Saturday is me playing an entertaining video game, and everyone in my family is in a good mood, and I have something yummy to eat for dinner. I have only acheived this feat a couple of times whenI was not trying to.

My ideal Saturday takes place in the warmer months. :) I get up 8 or 9-ish, get outside for anywhere from a half-hour to 2 hours of hiking or biking, have lunch somewhere where I can sit and read a book at leisure. Try to accomplish some kind of "chore" but usually only aim for one per Saturday (mowing, raking, laundry, etc.). Often all of these activities are with Mrs. Noah but sometimes it's just me and that's ok too.

When the weather isn't as nice I struggle to stay physically active (short walks, aerobics or stationary bike in the basement). Often I will just cozy up on the couch and watch some DVDs (whatever I have from Netflix, or old standbys like Monty Python, Futurama, Mr. Show, Friends). Or if I have something good I'll read. A lot of times Saturdays are my day to get ready for my Sunday D&D game too.

My Saturdays: Sleep in till around 10 or 11, curl up with soda and food for a day of College Football.

Well, now that its football season I do that, plus the Saturday game died two months ago and it doesn't look like people are really trying to reform it.

As for alone time I don't even have a cat. The last person I spoke to in person was Thursday and before that was Tuesday. I'd be considered agorophobic if I didn't need to leave the apartment for groceries. :(

An ideal Saturday?

That would be in autumn (prefer the slightly cooler weather) when I can get up a bit later in the day (say, 8:30 or so), have a liesurely breakfast, listen to some mellow music over a couple of mugs of keemun tea, ooze into the day, and finally, around 2 o'clock, have buddies come over either for a game or some flicks, rounded out with a nice dinner, a glass of read wine, less mellow music, lots of laughter, and a lot of joking.

Then again, my ideal life is probably based on the Franklin from Chaucer's Caunterbury Tales... ;)
