A question about the knowledge skill

Archimago

First Post
When one puts ranks into knowledge, one puts them into a specific field of knowledge. I know some of these according to example characters in some of the books, but I've looked through them and all the errata I've downloaded but I can't find a master list.

Is their an official listing of what the divisions of the knowledge skill are?

The ones in the PHB are:

Arcana
Architecture and engineering
Geography
History
Local
Nature
Nobility and royalty
The planes
Religion

Other than that, it depends on what setting you're in. Some campaign worlds may have their own subdivisions of Knowledge -- eg Rokugan has Knowledge (spirits), Knowledge (Shadowlands), Knowledge (war), etc, etc.

Not that I've seen. However, I think there would be too many knowledges to make a master list. Knowledge skills are found throughout many books. Are you looking for a specific type of Knowledge or just seeing what's out there?

it's really up to the DM. When I realized we would soon be facing a dragon, I started asking some questions about them on the boards. My DM said I could use that knowledge if I took a point in Dragonlore (which I gratefully did).

I think it's fairly similar for just about any other field of knowledge (e.g., knowledge of undead, demonkind, deserts, herbs, politics, etc.).

Well, then since no master list exists. I'd like to make one.

1) I'd like the areas to be fairly general [ie. no knowledge (dirty blue socks)].
2) Overall I'd like to have a list that covers as much as possible without having some being far more esoteric than others (related to #1) - this includes changing the PHB list

MASTER LIST

Arcana
Architecture and Engineering
Arts and Literature
Astronomy and Mathematics
Geography
History
Local
Nature
The Planes
Religion

I'll keep updating this list as changes are suggested/approved.

more useful

I think it would be more useful to have a list of knowledge skills and where they can be found. For instance the master list ones are Player's Handbook

Also,

There is Knowledge: psionics from the Psionics Handbook

I think a knowledge list is unnecessary. It should be what ever the player wants.

Knowledge (???) should be discussed with the DM and the DM needs to let every one know the limits of that knowledge.

there are uses

I think there are uses for a list of published knowledge skills. I also think it would be useful to have a list of prestige classes that require knowledge skills and what ones are required. I know for instance that some of the Hollowfaust classes require knowledge undead. A comprehensive list would allow players to prospectively plan out a career path with skill choices more easily. A list of knowledge skills with sources could also be an aid for designing prestige classes for those settings.

No limits!

I always think that the guide in the PHB are just guidelines to examples of Knowledge skills. There are many more in S&F, but again these are just encouragers. I let anyone take any Knowledge skill they went- so long as it's not overtly more powerful than the others officially listed.
