A Quick Map Tutorial (using Photoshop)

Yea... suppose I could make a pattern... I just don't ;)

And actually, the reason why? I made the grid once and it's what I use always... I have a file I start maps from... has various floor options I have made in the past (on different layers) as well as a grid layer, etc.

So, it's really not an issue, I was just showing how it was done (when I did it), but honestly, I don't do it every time - it's just there always.

Does photoshop cost? If it does, are there any ways to get a free program on which I can make maps and print them off to use as a dungeon map?

Yes it does cost money (a good chunk) so, sorry ;)

I know a lot of people who use GIMP - but I have always had Photoshop and have not used it (GIMP), so I don't know much about it.

I've made an almost full map in my spare time. I'm just wondering how you get altars, chests, dead people and other such things into your map short of drawing them yourself or ripping them from google.

Kudos

Well, if you don't draw them yourself, or make them from images online... you aren't left with much else other than going out and taking pictures yourself and using them to build things (which I HAVE done before).

Normally, if I want -say- a crate, I find an image of wood planks online, size them down (and crop as need be) - round and bevel the corners slightly and apply a drop shadow (basically).

Okay, thanks

I use GIMP to make maps.

Here's one

For objects (like the trees), I use sites like the Dundjinni forums(the mapping program, which I used to use exclusively) as the people there post thousands of pieces of art for free use (I've posted a few).

Incidentally, the above map took less than half an hour for me, although I'm sure it would take 3 to 4 times as long if I had tried to do that cold with GIMP the first time I opened the program.
