A Remake of Manos?

The Grumpy Celt

“Manos” Hands of Fate is a horrific movie of unsurpassed awfulness.

It was named specifically in three declarations by the U.N. as something never to be shown to any prisoners under any circumstances.

Oh, alright, I made up that last part. But it is a singularly bad movie made palatable only for receiving the Mystery Science Theater 300 treatment.

Spike Jones and Charlie Kaufman are working on a new project.

The only flick Hal Warren ever made was “Manos,” and he died in 1985. And he’s given a story credit here. Spike Jones directed “Being John Malkovich.” Charlie Kaufman wrote both “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Being John Malkovich.”

So Jones is going to direct a movie written by Kaufman based apparently on a story by Hal Warren.

What if they are remaking “Manos” in some form?

That would rock on so many levels.

I simply find myself wondering. As horrible as the movie was, it had at its heart a decent concept, something similar to Psycho or Last House on the Last. And Spike and Charlie are good at what they do.

Actually, Hal Warren did write another movie that never got made, called "Satan Rides a Bike", presumably a mix of the motorcycle gang and devil-worship genres. So it's possible, but not by much, that Spike and Charlie are filming it.

But a Manos remake would rock so hard.

Demiurge out.

They'll never be able to beat the charm of "Manos" as handled by the MST3K guys.

When I saw the MST movie, there was one point at which Mike had to operate a grappling device, and when the camera focused on the control panel it said 'Manos' under the controls he was using. I laughed my a$$ off.

No one else in the theater got it.

Interesting tidbit: The Island was also a remake of a film that was featured on MST3K...

Manos was recently featured in Entertainment Weekly (who article about how it is the worst movie ever). I would laugh until I turned blue if they did remake it... and promtly run to the theatre to see if they can do anything to make that horrid, horrid film better.
