D&D 5E A sidebar I'd like to see in the 5E PHB

If you need such a sidebar, then either the designers failed or the players' memories of their favorite game edition failed.

Considering the age of OD&D players, something to support one´s memory does not sound that awkward...

No, such a sidebar would indeed help. And the other question is, what would be lost by adding such a sidebar?

That would make a damn-fine free DDi article! Not sure you could fit it in the core books though...

This. Nothing says "We've given up on attracting new gamers" like wasting space in a book telling people how to simulate a game that hasn't been published in 20 years.

Perfectly fine as a web article, but let's be honest: Anyone who's curious about this will probably be able to figure this out for themselves.
