A Teacher for Laynie: Mystery at the Academy (Part 2)

"She prefers to be called my niece, or just Laynie," Vanitri says. "We're of no blood relation that I know, but as we say amongst the 'folk, 'Family's thicker than blood.' We're just a couple of orphans looking out for each other. Lex is watching her now. But she doesn't come to class much anymore because she thinks it's too simple and boring." Vanitri says with a chuckle.

Vanitri chuckles, "Somewhere around that age."

"I'll bet it's a long time growing up as an elf. I don't think I'd have the patience for it, though you certaintly seem to have matured quite wel."

"It's longer for some than others. As for me, I'm probably still not old enough to be considered an 'adult' by most elven standards, but that's okay, as I'm still in school. Even so, waiting until 110 is ridiculous--I say just because we are long-lived, it doesn't mean we have to be excessively slow."

"Well, it's done you well however you did it," Vanitri says with a smile. "I've been told I've got a little elven blood in me myself."

"Do you? Well, maybe that explains where you got your magical aptitude, perhaps? I hear the elves have a reputation for that, you know?" Misha suggests.

"The 'folk know magic as well, but I like to think I got a little bit of the best of both worlds," Vanitri says.

"That sounds like it could be a motto for a lot of Daryne's new students, eh?" Misha smiles "Even the Housemistress and her younger brother. I'm glad to see that the Academy has begun to be better about accepting people of mixed blood. Heck, back when I was younger, which of course was a long time for a human organisation, even the fact that I'm of mixed elven blood would have caused them to turn me away, if they even would have accepted a pure-blooded elf at all."

"Well, times have changed," Vanitri says. "Honestly though, I'm not sure I'd be here if it weren't for Laynie. She belongs here. Magic is just natural for her, it's amazing. However, I can't realy complain about the company I've met since I've been here."

"Natural, eh? Then you'd just better hope she's not a sorcerer. They say magic is natural for sorcerers, but somehow, despite their natural talent, they wind up being worthless and unable to learn proper magic at the speed a wizard does."
