Here is a good question for you guys.

If you took away the Aasimar's Light special ability and got rid of their Outsiderness, would you consider them +0 ECL?

Well I would say if you took away their outsider status and evened out their ability scores(although I havent a clue what ability they would have a penalty in) they probably would be...rules wise. really I personaly see them as only slightly more powerful than basic races. the ability score adjustment the Darkvision and immunities from being an Outsider and their energy resistances are the only really special things they get. Gnomes already get 3 cantrips once per day each so I dont even count light. same with the skill bonuses. And their energy resistances arent that big a deal...the fact that they have 3 is really the only thing. if it was one I probably wouldnt even consider that. So actualy I'd say no outsider immunities and one energy resistance...and maybe one ability + instead of two...and they'd be about even with the rest. its hard to say tho

I actually whipped up varients for Aasimar/Tiefling/Genasi that changed the way they worked a bit.

The *main* strength of an Aasimar lies in the Outsiderness and the Resistances, and the stat bonuses, not in the spell. So to create the 'low' Aasimar, at +0ECL, I ditched the resitances and balanced the stat bonuses (+2 Wis, -2 Cha), and it's OK.

You could also do a 'high' Aasimar that had an additional resistance, a +2 to Str, and Daylight instead of Light, at +2 ECL.

Or do a tiefling who was 'charming,': +2 Cha, +2 Int, -2 Con; same resistances, Charm Person instead of Darkness, etc.

Or do a 'water' Genasi who actually was oozey, etc.

I can put these up in a thread in House Rules, if people are interested (with the Life and Death genasi, and the Neutral Planetouched).
