My preferred method, roll 4d6, reroll all 1's and 2's until they are all at least 3's. Pick 3 highest. Assign rolls in order desired. Stat range 9 to 18, Averages in the 13 to 14 range.

I have never met a player who said no to high stats. Besides, low stats suck.

Ditto! :D

Maybe it's my days of GURPS or Hero playing. Maybe it's cheating players. Maybe it's the fact that stupid players are going to make poor decesions anyway and not be equal to the other characters and the cream will rise to the top.

In any case, it's been a point buy for me since 3.0 came out. I enjoy the 'even' starting point for the characters and it makes things nice and easy when someone starts complaing about how 'powerful' this guy is or how 'weak' he is.

Roll 'em baby!

I've been gaming and running the same bunch of players since 1989 or so, and being that we are old farts, there's just something about rolling dice that we like. My whole group likes the randomeness, and the fact that you can't come into character creation with a solid idea until you roll stats. We also like the fact that it produces a wide range of characters. I guess we're a bit different in that respect.

The group I played a lot of my early 3rd ed games with did 4d6, rerolling 1s. Made for some high powered characters, but it was a high powered game, so it worked out.

Other:

Roll 3d6 six times, arrange how you like. Then roll 2d4 bonus points and apply to whatever stats you want. No stat can be put above 18 with these bonus points.

Screwy, but we like it.

I voted "other" because we have many different DM's that use different methods.

I've used 4d6 drop lowest but am now leaning towards a 32 or 36 point buy
A DM I play with uses 24 dice, drop 6 lowest, arrange to taste (3 dice per stat).
Another DM uses 36 point buy (low-magic)

In the current game we use a 28-point buy

For the next game we will be rolling 21d6, drop the lowest three, and then arrange the 18 that are left, as desired, amongst the six stats. Gonna be interesting to see how that works out.

We use a 28 point buy, straight from the DMG. I really like the balance of high and low that has provided, it can result in some high stats but not excessive. Most characters have two good stats, in the 15-16 range, and either 10-11 in all the rest, or a nice array with an 8 somewhere. The players seem pretty happy.

I think I might go to 30 for the next campaign, and also make a proviso that they cannot play a character class they have already played in this campaign. But that won't be for a while, we still have to get going on this plotline...
