OK. I am forgetting the whole Naturally Psionic thing. I am trying to mash too much into the creature again.

The one thing that is still rattling around in my head is the lack of AC. Considering that in the conversion thread we ended up adding in telekinesis due to the great amount of illusory spell-like abilities we could not give equal compensation in the conversions, I am thinking that starting with the greater aboleth, the aboleth will gain inertial armor 1/day. Especially considering that I am not adding the telekinesis to the aboleths.

With the CR 9 common aboleth a 16 AC is not super terrible for a foe (but not good either).

With the CR 13 greater aboleth a 17 AC is poor. Inertial Armor would provide a +10 armor bonus to AC at the greater aboleths manifester level. An AC 27 may be a bit high.

Sorry, I am thinking as I type.

But considering a 13th level fighter with a +2 weapon and a +3 STR would hit with some regularity. It would be right in the wheel house.

The mage will have some issue with the SR/PR but not overwhelming.

So I am thinking that starting a greater when an aboleth would have gained the extra illusionary ability which is already covered by false sensory input, I am thinking an extra protective psionic power is the way to go.

Leaving each of these powers at once per day works, IMHO, as then the slack would be picked up by an actual psionic class. But considering most creatures are used plug and play, a higher AC should be part of the sample creature; AND considering an aboleth is not typically alone, thus making a higher CR enounter and higher level PC's to face off with it. The extra AC doesn't make this aboleth a tank.

Now I may be talking circularly, but I needed to free flow my thoughts a bit. Please bear with me. :)

In the end, I am comfortable, and believe it necessary, including inertial armor as a 1/day PLA starting at greater aboleth. Additional defensive PLAs may come every 1 or 2 age categories depending on the balance.

I would like an alternate take on this mad ramble.

Thanks!!

It's certainly reasonable. And a lot of the old powers/spells aren't easily convertible (in core rules, anyway), so it's fair to go with inertial armor instead. Go for it!

Any more thoughts and how to scale Enslave?

I have broken down Enslave into (5) aspects. The first two I think are pretty straight forward and unless there is a differing opinion, I will go with them.

#1 - Resistance to Enslave - Enslave's duration is indefinite, but the target is allowed a Will save every 24 hours to attempt to break free. I do not see that 24 hour window expanding over the age categories.

#2 - Similar to Dominate Person - With our choices of dominate person, dominate monster and psionic dominate, it seems that mimicking dominate person is the way to go. This also allows easy translation between a psionic and magically based creature if so desired.

The other (3) aspects are Range, Creature Types Affected, and Times/Day:

Range

Standard is 30'. As with the ecology article, this range expands with the greater aboleth. So sticking with 30' across the board seems restrictive. I believe that increasing 30' per category would be excessive, especially considering the Enslave ability would then extend beyond the aboleth's telepathy at higher ages. So I think the options are:

A - 30' per age category and increase telepathy 50' per age category, or

B - 30' + 10' per age category, giving the aboleth 40' early on and 100' at the most advanced age category.

Creature Types Affected

I am thinking humanoid plus one other type per age category. This could give a common aboleth humanoid and monstrous humanoid, while a greater aboleth could have humanoid, fey, and giant and a grand ruler (category 7 in the second progression) could have humanoid, monstrous humanoid, outsiders, fey, giants, magical beasts, aberrations, and dragons.

The other option would be to give a limited number at the beginning and leave it as such. I can see applications for humanoids, monstrous humanoids, fey, giants, aberrations (not so much...but aren't skum aberrations?), and outsiders.

Times/day

In the ecology the common was at 3/day and the greater was at HD/day. I am thinking HD/2 per day. This would put the common at 4/day and the grand ruler at 16/day. Or to have the start point line up it could be HD/2 minus 1 per day.

The other option is to stick with 3/day but add the ability to do multiple targets at once, but I think that would be very overpowered for any monster.

As always, your input is greatly appreciated Freyar (and any other lurkers out there that would care to chime in ;) )

Sorry, been pretty busy lately...

I like 30 ft +10 ft/age category for range and a fixed list of types. HD/2 times per day is probably reasonable, too.

I was looking over the write-up for the aboleth's enslave ability:

Enslave (Su): Three times per day, an aboleth can attempt to
enslave any one living creature within 30 feet. The target must
succeed on a DC 17 Will save or be affected as though by a dominate
person spell (caster level 16th). An enslaved creature obeys the
aboleth’s telepathic commands until freed by remove curse, and can
attempt a new Will save every 24 hours to break free. The control
is also broken if the aboleth dies or travels more than 1 mile from
its slave. The save DC is Charisma-based.

I noticed the 'one living creature' which would imply any creature, I would think. Yet the 'dominate person' would imply humanoid. I am having a hard time seeing the ancient race being restricted to only one of the youngest races on the planet.

I am thinking that dominate monster might be the right avenue for the enslave ability. Psionically, psionic dominate makes sence as it progressively increases. For simplicity's sake I think dominate monster would the proper choice.

What do you think?

Bykov.

Well, I think they meant any creature type. Changing to dominate monster would make it more explicit, but I think the reason they picked dominate person is because the dominate monster spell just refers the reader to dominate person. So I think they mean to use the mechanics of dominate person with the looser restriction of dominate monster. Confusing, I agree.

Good to have you back!

Environment: Any aquatic or underground aquatic.
Organization: Solitary (plus 1d4 enslaved and 1d6+1 servitors), pair (plus 1d4+2 enslaved and 2d4+4 servitors), brood (1d3+1 plus 1d6+4 enslaved and 1d8+10 servitors).
Treasure: 2× Standard.
Advancement: 9-11 HD (Huge), or by character class; Favored Class: Psion.

An aboleth attacks by flailing with its long, slimy tentacles, though it prefers to fight from a distance using its illusory powers.

Amphibious (Ex): Although aboleths are aquatic, they can survive indefinitely on land.

Bite (Ex): When swimming, an aboleth may use its bite attack. Due to the position of the aboleth’s mouth, it provokes an attack of opportunity when attempting a bite. An aboleth cannot attack with its tentacles at the same time it bites.
On a successful hit, an aboleth’s bite deals 2d6 points of damage, plus half its Strength bonus.

Detect Thoughts (Su): An aboleth can continuously use detect thoughts as the spell (CL 10th; Will DC 18 negates). It can suppress or resume this ability as a free action. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Enslave (Su): Three times per day, a common aboleth can attempt to enslave any one living creature within 30 feet as though by a dominate monster spell (CL 10th). The target must succeed on a Will save (DC 18) or be enslaved by the aboleth. An enslaved creature is allowed a new Will save to break the aboleth's control every 24 hours or if it travels more than 1 mile from the aboleth. Otherwise, it obeys the aboleth’s telepathic commands indefinitely unless freed by either a break enchantment spell or the aboleth's death. The save DC is Charisma-based.
At any given time, a common aboleth may control a number of enslaved creatures equal to twice its Charisma bonus.

Genetic Knowledge (Ex): Due to the aboleth's inherited memories, it is granted a +4 bonus on all knowledge skill checks. All knowledge skills are considered class skills and can be used untrained.

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, an aboleth must hit a creature of medium or smaller size with its bite attack. It can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity. If it wins the grapple check, it establishes a hold and can attempt to swallow the opponent in the following round.

Memory Siphon (Su): An aboleth consumes the memories of any living creature it ingests. Any living creature in the aboleth’s esophagus immediately, and every minute thereafter, gains one negative level. In addition, whenever a creature gains a negative level it must succeed a Fort save (DC 18) or take 1 INT and 1 WIS drain. The DC is 18 for the Fortitude save to remove a negative level. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Mucus Cloud (Ex): An aboleth underwater surrounds itself with a viscous cloud of mucus roughly 5 foot thick. Any creature coming into contact with and inhaling this substance must succeed on a DC 19 Fortitude save or lose the ability to breathe air for the next 3 hours. An affected creature suffocates in 2d6 minutes if removed from the water. Renewed contact with the mucus cloud and failing another Fortitude save continues the effect for another 3 hours. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Servitor Transformation (Su): To prepare an enslaved creature for long-term servitude, an aboleth encases the creature underwater in a thick slime cocoon. This cocoon is identical to the nourishing shell that aboleth lay their eggs. However, a living creature encased in it is transformed into a subservient aquatic creature (see Aboleth Servitor template) over the next 1d4+3 days. During this transformation, the target creature is not only physically changed, but mentally changed to be completely subservient and pliable to the aboleth's whims, including transfer of control to another aboleth.
A target creature is still afforded any Will saves it is allowed to break the aboleth's control (at a -4 penalty) during the first 3 days of the transformation. Any target able to regain autonomy may attempt a DC 10 Strength check (each retry at a +1 DC) to escape the slime cocoon. A creature that is able to escape can be restored to normal by a heal or greater restoration spell.
If after 3 days the creature is unable to escape, it is rendered completely immobile as the transformation runs its course. Once transformed, the creature is bound indefinitely as a slave to the aboleth and is unable to further resist its control, barring death of the controlling aboleth or the use of a break enchantment or dispel magic spell against an effective caster level equal to transforming aboleths manifester level.
The physical transformation, once complete, can only be reversed using either a wish spell or similar effect.
At any given time, a common aboleth may control a number of servitors equal to its hit dice.

Slime (Ex): A blow from an aboleth’s tentacle can cause a terrible affliction. A creature hit by a tentacle must succeed on a DC 19 Fortitude save or begin to transform over the next 1d4+1 rounds, the afflicted creature's skin gradually becoming a clear, slimy membrane. An afflicted creature must remain moistened with cool, fresh water or take 1d12 points of damage every minute. The slime reduces the creature’s natural armor bonus by 1 (but never to less than 0). The save DC is Constitution-based.
A remove disease spell cast before the transformation is complete will restore an afflicted creature to normal. Afterward, however, only a heal or mass heal spell can reverse the affliction.

Swallow Whole (Ex): An aboleth can try to swallow a grabbed Medium or smaller opponent by making a successful grapple check. A swallowed creature takes 2d8+8 points of piercing and slashing damage, per round, from the aboleth’s esophagus. In addition, a creature that has been ingested by an aboleth is also subject to its memory siphon supernatural ability while in the aboleth’s esophagus. A swallowed creature can cut its way out by using a light slashing or piercing weapon to deal 25 points of damage to the esophagus (AC 13). Once the creature exits, muscular action closes the hole; another swallowed opponent must cut its own way out.
An aboleth’s can swallow only 1 Medium, 4 Small, 16 Tiny, or 64 Diminutive or smaller opponents every hour.

Telepathic Link (Su): A common aboleth possesses a telepathic link with the greater aboleth for which it gathers slaves out to a distance of 100 miles. They can communicate telepathically. Because of this link, one has the same connection to an item or place that the other does. For instance, if the common aboleth has seen a location, its greater aboleth could teleport into that room as if it had seen it too.
A common aboleth also possesses a telepathic link with all servitors under its control out to a distance of 10 miles.

Telepathy (Su): A common aboleth can communicate telepathically with any other creature within 100 ft. that has a language. A common aboleth can also communicate telepathically with any of its slaves (1-mile radius) and with any aboleth (10-mile radius).

True Seeing (Su): Aboleths continuously use true seeing, as the spell (CL 10th).

Skills: An aboleth has a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. It can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line.
An aboleth gains a +4 on Bluff checks when using detect thoughts.

That's where you've been all this time, typing up that statblock! Seriously, though, it looks pretty good, at least the bit I've been able to digest. Any differences to highlight compared to what we discussed upthread?

No changes from what we discussed really. Majority of what we discussed will really show in the advancement of the aboleth through the age categories.

Went with dominate monster for Enslave.

The aboleths stat have minor changes from the attached progression because of HD bonuses (1 per 4 HD)

Skill bock reflects skill that are modified due to creature factors (speed racial, etc.) A good example is the -4 to Jump. No ranks, just this sucker is slower than a slug.

Genetic Knowledge is my take on the Knowledgeable skill.

Memory Siphon was a composite of what we discusses. Never a big fan of negative levels, but when something is sucking your memories...it makes perfect sense. Also added the brain damage factor ( 1 INT & 1 WIS )

Mucus Cloud is larger. 5' makes more sense mechanically.

Telepathy & Telepathic Link are used to encompass the aboleths original communication ability.

All (Ex) & (Su) abilities are magic-based. As we discussed upthread, commonality in these abilities is easier to digest.

Manifester Level is HD+2, which equals Caster Level.

All in all, I hope I have encompassed and represented the aboleth truer to what we believe the intent was of its capacity.
