Abusable character?

Don't forget that he still incurs arcane spell failure for armor use. So either no armor, limited to wizard spells without somatic components or from magic items, or incurs arcane spell failure with every arcane spell he casts.

I'd watch for reserve feats with that combo, as he can burn spells in one class while constantly blasting with a reserve feat from the other. But's he'll be down a few spell levels, so it might not matter.

Your other players are right to be concerned. Not about the Wizard/Cleric - that combination generally sucks. No, they should be concerned that their only primary arcane caster is multiclassed, and their only primary divine caster is multiclassed.

That's going to hurt them.

I recommend you don't worry about this character, and just play. It'll be fine.

Thanks for all the tips, everyone!

I think I'm going to limit him to the PHB for spells, simply so that it doesn't get WAY out of control. He's aware of the arcane spell failure, as he's going to limit himself to studded leather armor. He's asked if there's a way to reduce the failure percentage. Without getting into another class, though, I don't believe there is one.

We'll see how it goes.

There's a few, depending on how generous you want to be.

Core Rules Only: Mithral armour is the way to go. In particular, a Mithral Chain Shirt has only a 10% chance of failure.

Magic Items Compendium: Twilight armour reduces the ASF by 10%, at a cost of a +1 bonus.

Complete Book of Eldritch Might (d20): Spellcasting armour reduces the ASF by 15%, for a +2 bonus. Greater Spellcasting armour eliminates it entirely, for a +4 bonus.

I don't think any of these are unbalanced. YMMV.

About the best thing he can do as the group's primary healer is use Spectral Hand to cast his Cure spells at range.

Not unbalancing, but useful.

He's still abusable. Regardless of class choice, all characters are abusable.

Have jesters walk by, and throw random insults in his general direction. Have shop keepers comment on his parentage/ancestry. There's always the racial slur. Lots of good dwarf insults abound. I'm sure you can find a few with a simple search here on ENworld.

The abuse can vary from minor indirect slander, to out-an-out sexual innuendo.

"A wizard you say? A decrepit dwarf wizard? Sheesh, the academy must be getting desperate these days."

"Look at him! All those wrinkles! No wonder they call him the walking prune! A living raisin on legs, if you ask me!"

"Hahahaha! Watch how he waddles! My staff and I, we'll give him a good reason to waddle!"
