D&D 3.x AD&D vs 3e?

I'd actually call 3e more of a someone's personlized and heavily houseruled homebrew variation of 2e rather than off of 1e. Especially heavily influenced by 2.5/players edition.

I consider 3e to be a massive step backward from the Player's Option rules, at least in terms of character options. I see the influence in the combat system, but everything else seems to have come from Classic and 1e.

Frankly, I think that's a distinct improvement over Players Option. I thought PO: Characters and Powers was terrible.

So, I half want this thread to become an edition war, but not with 4e, it's just a theory I have that, unlike popular belief, there were just as many 3e haters as 4e haters, or more then once thought...

I am not going to take sides on any of the editions, but I'd like to know what you're favorite edition is and why, with facts and feelings and poetry if you really wanted, but not just AD&D and 3e, just in general, your favorite edition and why.

its been awhile since i posted..., I was a 3e hater, as it was the new take over companies way of bleeding us for more money once again, instead of updates. I am now playing 3.5 and like the changes they made which could have been updates sold in much smaller packages. (would have added up to more costs im sure but thats another story)...

Just a side note... I dont hate 4e as a fantasy game...I hate that they have the nerve to call it D and D...its not..
at least 3e and 2e are the same game.

You see, that's the point where I think many from the old Edition wars would disagree with you. 3e wasn't the same game as 2e anymore than Palladium was the same as AD&D (they both use a D20, and you roll it to hit, etc. etc. etc.).

You can see the direct relation between 3e and 2e, and how the later options rules were basically intwined into 3e, but 3e is different.

This is a little too extreme, but 3e is like Fallout 3 is to Fallout 2, both are fallout video games, but are they the same game?

A better analogy perhaps, Star Trek The Next Generation is Star Trek, but is it STAR TREK?

4e would be the continuation of that theme or idea...but a little further.

Fallout 3 is Fallout...so is Elder Scrolls a Fallout type game?

Or like Star Trek....

If you consider Star Trek the Next Generation a Star Trek...do you consider the NEW Star Trek movie (2009)...STAR TREK?

Some hardcore Star Trek fans may have a stroke with some people's views.

Fair cop. The implementation left a lot to be desired. But the absence of kits and customization options really hurt the diversity of the game, and Prestige Classes were a poor substitute.

Frankly, I find that a bit disingenuous. I don't consider 4e to be part of the same branch as 1e AD&D, 2e AD&D, 3x D&D, but I wouldn't compare it to two different game systems. It's clearly in the same family even if not exactly the same.
As far as I'm concerned, it's like denying that 5 card draw poker isn't any more related to 5 card stud poker than euchre simply because they all use 5 cards.

You should read the rest of my post.

Truthfully, I find more in common between 3.5 and 4e than 3e and core 2e and 1e.

If talking about card games, it's more like the difference between whist and it's descendants.

Whist would be the original.

Bridge would be 1e

Rook would be 2e

Spades would be 3e

Hearts would be 4e

Differences are seen as vast by various different groups, but they all have their original root in the same game.

For Gambling...more towards

5 card stud would be the original

5 card draw would be 1e/2e core

7 card draw would be 2.5

Texas hold em would be 3e

Changing Texas hold em to have 4 cards in hand would be 4e.

Differences are seen as vast by various groups, but they all have the same idea originally.
