I'd actually call 3e more of a someone's personlized and heavily houseruled homebrew variation of 2e rather than off of 1e. Especially heavily influenced by 2.5/players edition.
I consider 3e to be a massive step backward from the Player's Option rules, at least in terms of character options. I see the influence in the combat system, but everything else seems to have come from Classic and 1e.
So, I half want this thread to become an edition war, but not with 4e, it's just a theory I have that, unlike popular belief, there were just as many 3e haters as 4e haters, or more then once thought...
I am not going to take sides on any of the editions, but I'd like to know what you're favorite edition is and why, with facts and feelings and poetry if you really wanted, but not just AD&D and 3e, just in general, your favorite edition and why.
its been awhile since i posted..., I was a 3e hater, as it was the new take over companies way of bleeding us for more money once again, instead of updates. I am now playing 3.5 and like the changes they made which could have been updates sold in much smaller packages. (would have added up to more costs im sure but thats another story)...
Just a side note... I dont hate 4e as a fantasy game...I hate that they have the nerve to call it D and D...its not..
at least 3e and 2e are the same game.
Frankly, I think that's a distinct improvement over Players Option. I thought PO: Characters and Powers was terrible.
You see, that's the point where I think many from the old Edition wars would disagree with you. 3e wasn't the same game as 2e anymore than Palladium was the same as AD&D (they both use a D20, and you roll it to hit, etc. etc. etc.).
Frankly, I find that a bit disingenuous. I don't consider 4e to be part of the same branch as 1e AD&D, 2e AD&D, 3x D&D, but I wouldn't compare it to two different game systems. It's clearly in the same family even if not exactly the same.
As far as I'm concerned, it's like denying that 5 card draw poker isn't any more related to 5 card stud poker than euchre simply because they all use 5 cards.
