I have owned several HP printers over the years, and the color ones have always had the ability to print in greyscale. When you go to the Print dialog box, there should be a button called 'Preferences' and from there, you can specify to print the entire document in greyscale.

I don't know what specific HP printer you have, but if it was put out in the last few years, I'd be willing to bet it has this feature.

Really? That's very surprising. I've used HP printers all of types for years and I've never seen that. Is there a greyscale check box anywhere?

Nope, I gather that the PSC series is the only series by HP that does not allow the color to be turned off. I go and check the website now and again in the hopes that an updated driver will allow me to do so.

I very much like the printer otherwise - the cartidges cost half of what they did for my Lexmark, and last twice as long. Finally having a scanner has been nice as well. (I have even used it as a copier on occassion, which was a feature that I never thought that I would use.)

Hey Auld Gump--

I use a PSC 2210 at work at it can print in greyscale. Look under "Advanced" tab in the printer properties. Per HP though:

"NOTE: The image may still print using the color cartridge to achieve some of the shades of gray. The HP all-in-one will use the color cartridge for grayscale in both Normal and Best modes. The black cartridge alone is used In EconoFast mode. "

Hope that helps.

Already did, it was the first thing that I tried - on my setup screen there isn't an advanced tab. I have a choice between the standard setting choices and Services, Services allows me to choose 'single black cartridge' as one of the options, but it still prints in full color, even if that is the chosen mode - it makes no difference that I can find. It may be that the high end PSCs use a different driver than the lower end. I use a PSC 1210 printer, about the lowest end that is available.

*EDIT* I think that if the printer finds a color cartridge then it overrides the driver settings.

A second oddity, if you have a pure color item to print, and no color cartridge then it will switch to greyscale.

Not that this means anything to anybody ...

But for home use I've got a Samsung ML-1750 laser printer. Small, cost about 95$ at BestBuy when I bought it. Only prints in B&W, but I've found the cost-savings in the long run have paid off well enough that I don't miss color. Loading up an inkjet seems to cost 45-75 dollars depending. The cartridge for my laser costs about 70$ but I've had it for two years and have only replaced the cartridge a single time. I'm pretty wasteful with the toner, even, printing out fresh character sheets every level for all of the PCs in all of my games. Maps, etc. It's all in grayscale, but heck.

I originally bought the printer because, as a student, I need to print lots of papers every semester and that gets to be pretty expensive.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that does this.

Gareth - keep up the good work.

I buy your products and they have really helped my campaign. Are they perfect? No -but nothing else is either.

If XYZ product from yours (or any other company) doesn't conform to every single pre-conceived notion of what I consider perfect, it's no big deal. I'll continue to buy.
