Actually all of those classes were published in OD&D Supplements. It's interesting, actually, that up through 2nd edition D&D had 4 core classes only. All the other classes were variants on those 4.

and the original core classes were 3.

cleric, fighting man, and magic user

they added the fourth in a supplement too. Supplement I Greyhawk (1975)
and changed the ability score importance/order to reflect the new core class.

I have the same disorder. Only I've got about a dozen. :(

Also, older Dungeon Master's Guides. Those with the K.Bell "Demon Summoning" illo on pp 40 instead of the Erol Otus "Mage v. Undead Mage"

Wanna Be! :D I have approx. 30 copies with the Demon Idol on the cover and about a dozen of the Easley (orange spine version.)

Yes, I know where psionics came from. What I'm asking is if you consider all the 1E and 2E classes (including psionics) to be variants of the core 4, what makes 3E different? It seems to me that WotC classes have adhered pretty well to the core 4. At least as well as 2E did, when you count oddities like psionics.
I guess you could attempt to categorize all the core classes and prestige classes into 4 categories in 3rd edition. It would be a pain and wouldn't help a lot. What is interesting about it is the iconic roles may not necessarily be covered by a group unless the players specifically self-balance the party along those lines. The game has always been able to be played while missing a core class, but it makes succeeding more difficult. Big boom casters, healers, and strong combatants cover the major roles. Rogues changed the game significantly by being better than all the others. "Better" meant skills (or thereabouts) that outshine all the others. Now they are core as trapfinders and not having Trapsense in a party can ruin a good adventure.

Psionics aren't a core ability or class, but with the new books they look like an optional 5th.

Yeah, I hate that. Lately I've been trying to fight back against these shipping charge scams.

Excessive shipping is actually against Ebay rules, and can be reported. Since Ebay auction fees are based on the selling price of the item, some sellers try to sell an item at a really low price, and then take a huge profit on shipping. Many auctions say "no reserve" but are really hiding a reserve price by charging twenty or thirty dollars for "handling."

The problem is that there's no way to filter out high shipping charges when searching for items. It's a waste of time to have to find and read the whole auction listing before discovering that the shipping and handling charges cost more than the item itself is worth.

So now when I see an auction with "ripoff level" shipping charges, I click the "report this item" link at the bottom of the auction page. There's a specific category for reporting excessive shipping charges.

It's quick, anonymous, and Ebay takes it seriously enough to warn the seller right away. (I reported a guy that was selling 99 cent DVDs with a thirty dollar "handling fee" hidden deep down in the auction text, and his auctions were cancelled the next day.)

Maybe if enough of these sneaky sellers get their auctions cancelled, we'll start to see more honest shipping and handling charges.

As having sold a few things on eBay, those boxes for shipping books to you aren't cheap either. They can be almost $3.00, depending on where the seller buys them. Since I sell so infrequently I often have a box or two from things I bought that I can recycle, because I have the buyer pay actual costs plus a $1.50 for my time. Stuff on eBay can sell for so little it can quickly become not worth selling. Especially with how rediculous their fees are.

Like I will soon be listing some L5R 3E books on eBay. Even if I get $20.00 plus shipping, I will probably wish I just kept the books.

So depending on whether or not I have a box to recycle shipping on those books, even media rate, shipping costs can easily exceed $5.00, plus I have to drive 4.5 miles round trip to the Post Office. Which may not seem like much to you, but that is a 1/3 of a gallon of gas in my gas hog van, adding at least another $.70 to my "cost" of shipping it to someone.
If I was like a "real" business, and calcualted wear and tear on my vehicle, paid myself a wage for the 1/2 hour I spent going to the post office, etc... I could "reasonably" charge quit a bit for shipping.

$10.00 might have been excessive, but I didn't catch any indication of how much what was bought weighed. If it was more than 5 D&D books it probably was within reason. Towards the higher end of reasonable, but still "reasonable". If it was 4 or fewer books, yeah, they were "padding" their profit margin on their auction.

How many true 1st copies have you got knocking around in that bevy of 30?

Hi Ya DD!

Unfortunately I have not been lucky enough to nab either a True 1st or a 1st. :( Best one I got is a 2nd Print which someone tacked an old timey TSR Bumper Sticker in the back of that supposedly is a picture of a number of TSR employees of the time. Lots of 3rd Prints (about 6?) Lots of later prints with the yellow banner in the upper left corner. No UK softcovers, maybe someday....

Oh that is a tragedy. Hang on a second here...

Okay, I have a spare true 2nd that's seen better days but if you'd like to trade for something, please drop me an email at bsilvey@gmail.com or thedungeondelver@hotmail.com

It isn't fair that I have two while you have none.

Well I do have a 2nd Print, did you perchance mean a "spare True 1st tha's seen better days?" If so I'd certainly be happy to make a trade.

Sorry...no :( what I thought was a spare true 1st was in fact a 2nd (checked the copyright page), and the "true" was leftover from my frantic typing.

Sorry dude.
