Adding weapons to the Monk Weapon list

Hello all,

I have a player who wishes to make a "The Bride"-like character (from Kill Bill), ie a master of martial arts and the katana. I thought the simplest way to accomplish this was for him to make a monk and for me to make him take Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Katana) (even though you shouldn't be able to take said feat at 1st level for a monk) and a feat that would let him add the katana to the Monk Weapon list.

Anyone see here any potential problem? Was forcing him to use a feat too much? Should I have just changed the Monk Weapon list to suit his need (ie limiting the monk weapon list to the katana)?

We're playing 3.0 btw.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Assuming you stat the katana out as a Bastard Sword, I see little problem with this. Take EWP, get proficiency. Get another, allow him to use it in conjunction with FoB. It seems like he's taking two feats to make his monk survivable in the early levels.

Two feats is fair (and probably what I'd rule) but does make it a little underpowered. I suggest making it one feat, as it does fit in with the monk style, RP wise.

Remember that if he uses it in two hands (adding 1.5x his STR to damage) that he should not be able to deflect arrows.

My bias: I give the weaker classes more leeway (sp?) than the stronger ones.

I certanly agree with the idea of making non-monk weapons usable with Flurry of Blows. Then again, I support the idea that you could learn to finesse a greatsword. However, I don't think allowing you to use one weapon as a Monk Weapon is worth a feat. I think it needs something extra, though nothing so powerful as a + to hit or damage.

But isn't it a cool visual, a katana-wielding monk deflecting arrows with his sword? :p

Thanks for the comments. I certainly could tell him that his Monk Weapon list is made of the katana, and only the katana. If I make it a monk weapon, then it will be usable like any other monk weapon (ie FoB-able).
