I've included some ideas similar to what you're talking about here in my homebrew setting.
Over the last few centuries magic has evolved, and the world is now what would be called medium to high-magic. Before that, the number of spells were but a fraction of the ones commonly used today. The gnomes had a lot of illusion spells, the elves a lot of enchantments and so on, but it wasn't until the various player-races started to develop extensive interracial connections and exchanging ideas, information and spells, that the wizards of the world started to realize what an enormous potential and versatility magic actually has!
Once they saw how many different ways magic was being used by other races, their imaginations soared and spell-developing soon beacame the wizards surest way to fame and prestige...
