(Adventure) Heroes of The Vesper Peaks (Uriel judging)

OOC: Oh, we're back :)

Nace slips out of the cart and adjusts his armor, then loosens his weapons in their scabbards, not drawing them yet as he sees Jagos talking to the guard. The youth folds his arms and leans against the wagon, trying to look non-threatening and certainly not about to threaten the guards life. He nods at what Jagos says, and glances up at the causeway, just making sure of his surroundings.

Grog climbs out of the wagon, grunts at the guard, and looks around
for any other people. He puts away his dagger and draws his scimitar.

After doing all that, he attempts to position himself so that he can block
any attempt to flee that is made by the guard.

Hopping out of the wagon, Kunst stands next to Jarret surveying the building with an architect's eye; leaving the guard to be dealt with by the others.

Jagos said:
"Sorry for that." Jagos says, not entirely untrue; especially since it didn't work. "We're actually here for your sake. We have heard about a fearsome demon trapped in this mountain; and about to be unleashed to take his vengeance if the mines are dug in the wrong direction. The guild officials wouldn't let us look into it but we couldn't just leave you all to your doom, could we? We just thought you'd be as stiffnecked about this as your boss. I hope that was wrong?"

"Sorry?" The man pauses for a minute and listens... "Wait... Kreepto? 'dat you?" He looks at the tiny kobold who just now popped out of the cart. "So that's what they've been doing! Demons and devils, evil creatures... so you are here to save them then? Oh, thank you!"

The man seems extremely relieved now. He pauses for a moment before explaining in great length his current situation...

"Thank the gods. I'm glad someone came. My name is Asen. I see you have the kobold miner with you. He's a good lad. Strange things started happening after he left us. Ever since Kreepto's caravan went off, things have changed here."

"The workmen don't come out of the mines, except during the darkest hours. They don't ask for food or water from the storehouses either, they just come out and howl to the high heavens and the stars. Then, after they wake everyone outside and generally disturb the peace, they slink back into the caves. We man our posts and watch, or sleep if we can, but everyone is afraid to just ask them what's going on. I was deathly afraid of them... and the foreman tells us to just let them continue their hard labor. He tells us to lock the doors during the night, and stay out of their way. He sometimes takes some of us into the mines to help the laborers, and we have no choice but to follow. And they never come back out... I just can't figure it. This has been going on for a week now... and I'm more afraid than I've ever been in my entire life..."

(the man looks competent enough for crossbow work, but too slow and frail for real combat)

Jagos looks a little scared as he hears of this turn for the worse. Damn, what have I gotten myself into, I don't wanna end up as some mindless weredemon zombie. Oh well, there is no backing down now, is there..

Before Asen has finished speaking Jagos has gathered himself and starts trying to find out more about the situation so they can do something about it.

"That's what we're here for allright. We're gonna need some information from you first though."

"First of all: will we be safe here for some short time more or do you know any better place to talk?"

(If he deems this safe enough:)

"How many seems, like your foreman, to have no trouble with these posessed miners? And how many would report our presence to one of them?"

"How can we access the mines? Are there more than one entrance and are they guarded?"

"Did you notice anything special happening before this all started?"

ooc: What time is it?

It is afternoon, and the sun is slowly setting outside the building.

"This is at the ground level, so we lock the gates. Most of us are too afraid to stay here, so they either sleep in the upper levels or if they can't take the noise they often sleep in the cellars. But even down there it has been getting loud... it's as if the miners picks are scratching on the cellar walls even though we are a quarter mile from the nearest cavern. Ed calls it the howling of the mountain."

"The foreman and the captain aren't bothered by the miners, they go in and out of the mines freely. The only people that don't work inside the caverns our those of us that man the walls."

"There are at least eight current caves, and a few closed off routes that never get used anymore..."

"Nope... nothing. Kreepto and a few others were kicked off the team, and then the very next night, this demon you speak of must have started using it's mind control on everyone. That's horrible... poor kids. But you'll get the demon, and everyone will be safe again..."

Nace listens to the man's tale, the youth leaning back against the wagon and crossing his arms over his chest; trying to look cool, collected and slightly bored. That last part fails as he listens to the tale, and can't suppress a chill that runs up his spine at the mention of the howling, and the scratching.

"OK, now that... that is wrong," the young ranger mutters as he listens closer, dark eyes occassionally flicking to the sides to gauge the reactions of the others.

Jagos asks some more questions of Asen:

"Does it seem like all of the worksmen get out during the night? Have you actually seen them or are they just heard?"

(if he has seen them) "You said that the guards that were taken into the mines were never seen again? So they don't come out at night either?"

"Does it seem like they come from all of the mines or are there more activity by one of them?"

"Do you trust the other guards or should we stay hidden from them if we don't want the captain and foreman to know about us?"

After hearing the guards answers Jagos turns to the others, asking them what they think should be done:

"It seems to me like we have a few choices now. We could either try sneaking into the mines at night when at least some of them are out here; or we could wait up here somewhere during the night and try to find out more tomorrow.
Sneak into the mines during the day if they aren't as 'wild' then, or perhaps try to get our hands on someone who knows more about this and get some infomation from them, probably the foreman or the captain."

"Any other ideas?"

"Does it seem like all of the worksmen get out during the night? Have you actually seen them or are they just heard?"

"Erm... I don't know... really. I'm not privy to guess how many workers are in the mines, I'd guess fourty or fifty at any given time, but I've never really tried to count them. I'd say more than 30 men come out every night. You can see them from atop the tower posts surrounding the facility."

"You said that the guards that were taken into the mines were never seen again? So they don't come out at night either?"

Right, that's what I said...

"Do you trust the other guards or should we stay hidden from them if we don't want the captain and foreman to know about us?"

"Oh... um... I'd be weary. I've worked here for a long time, and I trust most of the men to be honest and hardworking... but being honest around here means you tell your superior's what's up right away."

OOC: I've attached a minor map of the facility. The group is housed in building 1, and there are a number of other structures within the walls of the fort, though you havn't seen most of it yet.
