Adventure Ideas from Songs

I've never run a full out adventure based on songs, but I have gleaned plenty names, place, and ideas from bands, metal bands, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Megadeth.

And often times, when I'm writing an adventure, these bands help me out of a block, by giving me some much needed creativity.

As to more modern bands, only Godsmack and Sevendust come to mind for at least breaking that creativity block, and there 10 years old, about the time I graduated high school, hm...

Back in college, I used the album "Lords of the New Church" by Lords of the New Church as inspiration for a whole D&D campaign. Even started it in a city called Portabello, the name of a song from the album.

So...do the Little Boys Play With Dolls? ;)

My DM has had me searching for old country songs with the word "devil" or references to the devil for several weeks... apparently, there will be a bar scene in which these songs will be necessary... I'll be excited to see/hear/play it. :)

Not quite country, but old blues... how about some Robert Johnson? He did songs like "Hellhound on My Trail", "Me and the Devil Blues", and "Up Jumped the Devil". He supposedly sold his soul to the devil to become a blues singer...

I can't believe no one has mentioned this one!

St. George and the Dragon by Toto - some excerpts:

"Can you tell me where I might find the Hydra?
Is he wearing a familiar face?
Does he still live below seventh avenue,
In the slums of Satan's Grace?"

"Does he know that I'm a soldier of fortune
And not a victim of circumstance?
We drew lots for his soft underbelly.
Now his fate is sealed with my lance."

"Is it true that he's a mighty warrior
And a viper of the first degree?
I've been sentenced here to slay the giant,
Geld this fear I cannot see."

Other songs I've mined include "China In Your Hand" and "Heart & Soul" and a lot of other stuff by T'Pau, "Ballroom Blitz" by Tia Carrera, and "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden.

Someone was asking about Country - I've probably mined a few of those, too, but the only one that comes to mind right now is "I'm No Stranger To The Rain" by Keith Whitley.

And then, of course, there's one of my character's (A Wizard named Darboz) theme songs - I didn't mine it, it worked the other way around and the song seems to fit him to a T - "Rooms On Fire" by Stevie Nicks. :D

Oh..and here's more metallic musical inspiration...

"Still Life"--Iron Maiden
"Flash of the Blade"--Iron Maiden
"Ghost of the Navigator"--Iron Maiden

"Snaggletooth"--Motorhead

"Street Justice"--Twisted Sister

"Jack Frost and the Hooded Crown"--Jethro Tull (Ok...so it's not ALL metal)

"Widowmaker"--WASP
"The Last Command"--WASP
"Mantronic"--WASP

"Harvest Moon"--Blue Oyster Cult
"Godzilla"--Blue Oyster Cult (C'mon...substitute a Tarrasque and yer off to the races!)

Stay tuned....
