*Scun determines that all of his friends have safely stabilised.*

*Meanwhile, the hobgoblins quickly determine that all of the fallen hobgoblins are dead but one, who has already stabilised. This includes the four that died while the party was there and five more that were dead before they even got there. They then begin to coup-de-grace the unconscious orcs unless the party moves to stop them.*

ooc: I'm kind of waiting at this point for others to post something, even if it isn't dialogue. Scun isn't really the best spokesman for the party with his charisma of 6.

OOC: I don't think the hobgoblin would be able to tell at a glance wether they are just down or bleeding out, not to mention it would just be much safer to heal first and examine later. Can't post dialogue now, but I'll be back in an hour or two to give the hobgoblins an earfull.

Somac: Male Human Bbn 3

Somac experiences a variety of emotions at what he sees playing out before him.

As a youth in the north, he killed many orcs and hobgoblins. Hell, he has just returned from killing goblins and hobgoblins and cutting off their ears for bounty in the city of Monemvassia. However, he has never killed a goblinoid woman or child. And these appear to be innocents from what he can tell. He does not relish the idea of fighting the hobgoblin, and frankly he is a little afraid to fight in his current state of injured exhaustion. However, he will not shrink from killing one more goblinoid if she presses the issue.

Somac edges up closer to A'jardin and Scun, almost childlike, hoping that the academic's superior intellect and the priest's wisdom will somehow find a way out of this without further bloodshed. At the same time, he readies himself to fight the hobgoblin if they give their go ahead.

Somac does not speak, but hopes that his manner clearly indicates to his comrades that he is leaning heavily on their judgment in deciding what he will do.

(OOC: OK, looks like no one is stopping them from Coup de Gracing the orcs.)

*After finishing off the orcs, the hobgoblins move to the two gray renders, both very much alive, and begin to coup de grace them as well.*

If you cannot control your subordinates, there is nothing I can do about the duel. However, if you allow this duel to continue, then that must forfeit your claim of wergild, as that one <gesturing toward the female hobgoblin> is attempting to settle the matter, and whatever the outcome, the issue is closed. You claim we are a band of thugs, but there you stand, refusing to let us heal our wounded so you can try to extort money from us to cover your own losses. Return to the village and claim that it was you who defeated these orcs, we do not want your reward, though we earned it for you. If you wish to take your so-called weregild you will have to take it by force like the highway robbers you seem to be. Or... you could prove me wrong and actualy be what you claim.

OOC:
[sblock]heh, couldn't care less about the orcs, they nearly killed us all. Any thoughts on the hobgoblins telling Scun not to heal anyone, even if they can't tell if they're dying or not? I have to admit, it's kind of bugging me. Also, I believe that's the single longest in-character soliloquy I've ever delivered. I feel out of breath.[/sblock]

"Are you trying to take the moral high ground with me human? Because it isn't working. You rushed in out of the blue and killed my kin and now it looks to me like you want to kill more--or at least the fact that you have made a threat of force just proves to me that I was right to stop you from reviving more of your allies to back that threat up--I don't want to see your comrades die, but my first responsibility is to my own comrades, and right now, it seems like dissuading you from an attitude of 'Aww...why bother talking--we can take 'em!' is the only way to do that. If we had wanted to attack your people, we would have attacked the girl who came into the bush, but instead we let her hide there with us until the fighting died down, but we don't Would you have shown us the same courtesy? Ha!--of course not; you aren't even sorry that my people died even the ones you killed. 'Just a bunch of hobgoblins; who cares, right?' You killed a man--two really--and you protest that a fine of 500 gold is too much to pay? In most villages, they would have you hanged for the crime, and I know the value of the equipment you carry--I know you can pay if you want. But tell me--what would you expect to receive in a rural town if you were caught murdering someone on the street with a bow? Look me in the eye and tell me you would expect to be treated better than I have done."

(OOC: OOC check--does anyone feel the least bit guilty about murdering the hobgoblins? Good-aligned folks especially and maybe the many Lawful Neutrals as well?)

Scun sees Somac's troubled look and hears the Hobgoblin's words and cannot hold his tongue.

"Call us murderers? Look at your men RIGHT NOW! If it wasn't for us, you would ALL be dead. The orcs and the renders together would have made short work of you. I don't like this situation any more than you do. I wish nobody had died. But really, you have no claim on us. Be on your way and we will be on ours."

"Not so. We had the situation under control. The renders were mostly dead, by which I mean gravely wounded, when you got here, and they would have been dead before the orcs appeared if you had left us alone. Then we would have easily defeated the orcs. Don't believe me? Look at it transitively: You managed to whack at us for a bit and then still beat up the renders and the orcs with random charging. We were already flanking the renders and would have gotten in several bouts of disciplined attack. But you managed to defeat all comers--clearly, then, your group was a superior force to the orcs, since you beat them all and the renders, right? But we were ambushed not by the inferior orcs, but by you--that's where we ran into trouble. And what's worse, your attack came when we hadn't finished off the renders, whereas the orcs would have been too late to trouble us."
