"Again, you find fault with us where you have the same fault. Listen to yourself talk about orcs! You insult my heritage freely but take offense when we haven't said anything bad about Hobgoblins?"

"Perhaps you are right about the way I speak of orcs," the hobgoblin leader concedes, "If you like, I'll apologise if you prove yourself to not be treacherous. However, I find your actions and frankly your attitude about the deaths to prove that you and your comrades do not consider hobgoblins to be living, feeling beings whose lives are worth a damn."

Scun starts to relax.

"I am saddened by the loss of life here today. Our motive was to save the child, not to murder your kin. After the battle was joined, I think both sides made assumptions that were for the worse. Here is my suggestion. You can take the equipment and money from the Orcs that we defeated as your weregild."

"I would gladly do so, except that the village has required the orcs' equipment before they will pay us for the quest. However, if you want, we can check the orcs for money and subtract that from the 500 gold weregild. I'd frankly rather keep both because those thieving clerics recently told me that the price for a Raise Dead has gone up from 500, which is why we set the weregild at that level back when our group codified it, to 5000 due to some kind of 'revision,' so we can use any more help we can get."

Somac: Male Human Bbn 3

OOC: Somac has no experience with goblinoids that are not evil, so he frankly felt no remorse at the killing. However, all this talk has a chance of making it through his thick skull. Perhaps he can make a Sense Motive check to realize that they are not evil? If he realizes this, he may yet offer up the weregild, especially if he believes they will use it to raise their fallen comrade.

In the mean time, though, he is very concerned that they are attempting to kill the "good doggie".

IC: As the hobgoblins approach the "good doggie" Somac feels a moment of panic. He doesn't want the child's "pet" to be killed, but at the same time he doesn't want to provoke the band, which clearly hates him, any further.

After a moment of indecision, he puts up his hands and says as gently as he can, "Wait...not that one yet." In a sign of good faith, then, he slowly places his greataxe on the ground in front of himself and backs a few feet away from it.

"Why not?" the hobgoblin leader asks curiously, motioning for his men to hold off for a second.

(OOC: Somac rolls an 18 on Sense Motive and thinks these hobgoblins don't seem so evil.)

"I think it is the child's...pet," the barbarian says, knowing how ridiculous it sounds even as he says it.

While there is no love in Somac's heart for goblinoids, he feels that these are not as evil as those he has met before. Also, the party is in bad shape and might not survive a fight with this band. What good is 500 bits of gold to him if he is dead? And if the same 500 might buy the good will of this group, what harm in that?

"Take my greataxe," he says to the hobgoblin leader. "It is finely made and will fetch 150 in gold. I also have 35 pieces of platinum in my pack that I will add to that. That should fulfill the weregild."

ooc:
Could we have a party status report? Who's stabilized and who's up, at least?

ooc: I don't think we should pay them 500 and let them take the orc equipment on top of that. We were the ones to defeat the orcs, we have claim to their stuff. If the Hobgoblins need the orc equipment for their quest it should be a bargaining chip.
