At some point, Garret realizes that there are four tracks heading
against the three runners going the other way, and two of them before the other two (he can tell the relative timing of the tracks because a footprint atop another footprint leaves a noticable mark). The tracks leading the second pair matches the bootprint of the body, and the follower's tracks, you realize, lead off from where a rut in the ground probably indicated a sitting person. You had dimissed the rut as "noise" at first, just a caravener taking a rest, but you match the tracks now.
The path eventually leads him into a clearing, which is obviously a good spot for an ambush, with a slight to both north and south rise and heavy underbrush. The group needn't worry, though, because the ambushing is all in the past, and the tracks on the ground are a confused criss-cross. The first pair of tracks into the clearing go through it, circle around, and end up on the southern hill, where deep footprints suggest they stood for some time before becoming the chasing pair of footprints heading the other way. The second pair of tracks goes into the center of the clearing. The leading pair of footprints turns in place, runs to cover on the northern side of the clearing, runs to the southern side of the clearing, runs back, and becomes the chased pair of bootprints that culminates in the body. You note that all the trees, on both the northern and southern sides bordering the clearing, are slightly worn about six inches off the ground, as if a rope were tied around them. The second set of footprints follows the first into the clearing, backs up several feet, falls to its knees, and then collapses, lying there for some time. Again, it appears that someone has done their best to hide all of the tracks- but there is only so much one can do about the copious amounts of blood the one that lay here seeped into the forest floor.
As Garret tracks, he feel fully in tune with the forest, each detail seeming to call to him. He moves through the world in a trance, capable of calling out details as he sees them.*
* Like Aragorn!
You rolled quite nicely.
