Trying to assuage his earlier insult, the elf offers politely.
'But since I can hold an extended watch, maybe you should take the chance to rest and relax, Lady of Lionel. The writings that I studied on humankind at home told me that their aristocracy, and especially their women, expect physical and mundane tasks to be performed by people of .. hmm, lower status. That would be the right word, wouldn't it. It seems like the domestics normally asociated with your social standing didn't make it into this tower?'

Fant's lips twitch, resisting a smile. She is amused, rather than insulted, by the cultural misunderstanding. "Nobility does not always work quite like that," she says. "Since it appears we have some time, perhaps I can explain the finer details of human government and customs to you...."

"As many of the rest of you as possible need to stay outside. If we can't kill it, no point sacrificing more people than necessary."

Hmm. Perhaps I was too pessimistic, and have demoralized the troops. Fant waves her hand in a casual manner. "I wouldn't worry too much about it, Percy. Your spells should be more than enough to deal with the problem. I have a bad tendency to voice worst-case scenarios aloud." She smiles comfortingly. "I will go in with you, and I have every expectation of coming back out again."

Ishmael was stunned. The nobility had always appeared strong and powerful to one such as him. Fear was for the lowly and the weak. Yet, one of the most powerful sorceresses he knew saw death before her.

At that point, he wished that he had never left the path of Paladinhood. He had always been told that true Knights never knew fear. His own terror in this quest, as well as in quests before, made him feel like a farce.

Then, he remembered something that Sir Mazan Ironforge had taught him:
"When a dwarf is hungry, he puts food in his belly. When you are afraid, little Ishmael, put courage in your heart" Sir Mazan laughed when the young halfling looked at him with puzzlment.

"I do not believe that the divinities would hear the prayers of one such as I, my Lady." he told her truthfully.

"But I also do not believe that they would leave thee to a death so ignominious. Take heart and rest, my lady." He gave her as reassuring a smile as he could. "Even if the gods should leave thee to danger, this Knight shall ward thee from harm. On the morrow, death shall pass thee by unscathed.

This I vow."

Ishmael casts read magic. What is he looking for exactly? In general, the spellbook appears to be fairly large, and contains spells ranging from cantrips all the way up to 6th level. You do find an interesting note on the page after the pyrotechnics spell:

"Prim. Weakness: req. burning target. Item note: use Alch. fire?"

Ishmael pointed the note out to Persephone as well as anyone else who was still awake.

"Doth the Pyrotechnics spell conjure creatures? Doth fire dispel the smoke?" he muttered these inquiries to himself, having little clue to them. He regretted not taking a closer interest in the lore of spellcraft.

He readied his oil flasks with fuses. If Alchemist's fire was the creature's weakness, then this was the best he could do. He would suggest the same to the others if they were still awake. Torches would also be useful.

Fant shakes her head. "I think you're reading that wrong. The spell he was experimenting with- it requires a 'burning target,' although what it does with it you'll have to tell me. That's the weakness he speaks of- I doubt hitting a creature of smoke with fire will do much good. In any case, it looks like our good wizard was trying to overcome this defect, and the creature is either a side-effect or the proposed solution." She frowns. "Does he have any spells to create such a beast? Or to bring one here from... wherever they come from?"

The Deep Halfling nodded at Fant's words, not necessarily agreeing with her statements but willing to follow her instructions to the best of his ability. It was true that it was not likely that fire would be the weakness of a creature of smoke, but many things unlikely was possible through magick. He readied the flasks, nonetheless.

Ishmael did not know which spell in the book did what, but continued to look for more clues. If he should any more clues, then he would report to anyone who was awake.

If Persephone was still awake, then he cooperated with her in the deciphering of the spell book's secrets. He hoped that his perusal did not activate any traps upon the book. Ishmael was as careful as possible in this endeavor, even doff his heavy gloves to unencumber his fingers.

Persephone

Persephone smiles shyly at Ishmael's comforting statement. She gives the little halfling a hug. "Thanks, Ishy. Whatever happens, we'll do it together."

She then will try to help him with the spellbook, but only until bedtime. She certainly wants to get her 8 hours in.

"I think the note is saying the primary weakness of this spell is that it requires a burning target. But is it an attack spell? It does seem that he set something on fire in order to experiment with the spell. If he did, we should bring something in there to put a alchemical fire out.

OOC: 1. I don't know that she would be much help. Other than a lucky roll at Spellcraft +3, she can't even read the stuff.

2. She does have Craft: Alchemy +5, if that helps regarding how to put out an alchemist fire.

3. I had asked earlier about whether they could hear what was happening in the field. I'm curious because if some of the party is inside and some out, I want to know if they can communicate.

Yes, you could hear the dagger clatter to the floor withot difficulty.

"I have a water skin. I've been told I have a keen eye, though some here may have a keener. Perhaps those most adept at fighting can aid Pesephon-, er, Percy in slaying the creature, while I search for the source of this problem with 2 or 3 water skins. I imagine it would be close to the center. If you, er, need me in the melee, I'll be there."

Nars will step around the perimiter of the field, trying to use his engineering knowledge to imprint in his mind the distances to cover to get to the center.
