"Doth the Pyrotechnics spell conjure creatures? Doth fire dispel the smoke?"

Taking another, careful glance at the Spellbook himself, Morulas starts to ponder some dreadful possiblities.
'I think we can assume, that Rilithorne wanted to try the Pyrotechnics spell. And to that end, from the note in his book, we know he needed to create a fire.'

Glancing again at the smoky haze behind the magical ward, he continuses.
'But how did that creature come into being? He might of course have summoned a variant of the little airy dervishes we encountered at the ground floor, a variant composed of flames instead of wind.'

Quietly, the elf shakes his head. The creatures downstairs were much, much smaller than the one captured by the ward and the Wizard did after all leave a note about alchemical fire. 'Maybe..' Morulas takes a reproachful look at the stone wall surrounding them

'Maybe he used the alchemical fire and unintentionally created or summoned a fiery creature which in turn was transmuted into one of smoke by the spell he prepared. This tower, if Nars is right, is quite a bit older than Rilithorne himself and there are elemental forces bound into it's walls. The gate of ice and fire we passed is proof of this. Some fiery beast that Rilithorne himself didn't anticipate and struck out against with the spell he had prepared.'

Morulas nods to himself. 'Yes, that would probably be the most likely solution.'

Still, though he shudders at the very thought, the elf can't help but also share his most sinister thought. With eyes downcast, he continues.
'Rilithorne could, maybe just maybe, also have mishandled the alchemical fire, dousing himself with the sticky fuel. To save himself he might have desperatly cast the last spell he prepared and, against all odds, succeded the Pyrotechnics just as he was turning into a living torch.'

Again, Morulas hesitates, afraid to finish the dread thought.
'Than, Rilithorne himself might indeed be the poor creature in there. His flesh being slowely consumed by the flames as he turned into a figure of living smoke... and likely quite insane. But that of course, would be highly unlikely.'

Persephone

"Evidently Pyrokenetics is a spell that can manipulates the fire and smoke, but only of an existing fire. Since he's made a note to use alchemist fire, it's probably he did so in order to get this spell going. Since there's nothing else around, we can probably assume he was experimenting. It seems he created an everburning fire, perhaps, as well as some sort of creature. I don't think Rilithorn is that creature. It seems to be mostly mindless, attacking anything that moves. Perhaps, having created a fire, and cast the spell, he then cast a summoning spell to create a smoke monster. Perhaps one which needed smoke in order to be summoned. For whatever reason, it then did not obey his commands, and the tower went into shut down."

"Sir Ishmael, let's try to find some summoning spells. Perhaps there are some notes on some other pages as well."

Doing as Persephone instructed, Ishmael continued his readings. Whenever he encountered a spell, he gave the princess its name to see if she knew ought of it.

(Assuming the perusal of the book was finished without clue) Ishmael will turn in, taking up his part of the watch when his turn comes. That is, unless further orders are given him or further concerns brought to his attention (healing, etc.).

In the back of the spellbook, you find some notes on the crafting of magic items. There is an entry entitled "Bead of Smoke" with a bunch of cryptic arcan symbols pertinent to its creation, and the following note:

"As I hoped, alchemists fire seems sufficient to generate the required fire for the spell. It shouldn't be necessary to attach a prestidigitation cantrip to each bead, which should save time and effort in crafting."

There's a small sketch showing a small ceramic sphere, hollowed out so that a drop of alchemists fire can be placed inside before it is sealed up. Runes are carved delicately on the outside of the sphere, suggestive of some sort of enchantment.

There's another note as well, indicating "Intl. Ord. 3 units."

The procedure doesn't seem to call for any creature to be summoned, created, or otherwise involved.

Persephone

"Hey gang! This looks interesting."

Persephone will show the passage to the others.

"It looks like he ordered three beads. He then probably put the alchemist fire in one, and then cast the spell based on the fire the bead created when thrown or crushed. Perhaps the items were defective somehow and this being was summoned."

OOC: Have they finished the spellbook now? Any chance of finding more notes?

Fant raises her eyebrows at the new informaton, and echoes her thoughts aloud. "Interesting, to be sure, but it seems like there is no further information on how to proceed." She shrugs. "I think I shall retire now. If you find anything more of consequence, inform me in the morning. Good night, Percy. Good night, Sir Ishmael." And so on with anyone else who remains awake. She then lies down on her back on the floor and pillows her head on her arms, closing her eyes and falling asleep.

Gorefoot - Gnome Barbarian 1

Gorefoot stands his watch and rests that evening, relieved that the whole matter will be settled in the morning.

Nars finishes his watch and wakes up those next. He sleeps as though it is the night before one of his exams at the Academy. Tomorrow he will be put to the test, and he is more uncertain of this test than any he has ever taken before.
