OoC:Just waiting on Velbrik's action.I think I can see where his direction lies, however...

IC: Velbrik feints one way, then spins back the other in order to catch the Automaton unawares before striking. realizing that the Automaton was not even registering his subtle movements, Velbrik brings down his blade, catching it's carapace with a clang, <3HP>, knocking off a small bit of it's body.

The Automaton attempts to fire point=blank at Thale, draweing a blow <8HP> that destrpys one of it's crossbows. The shot goes astray (of course).

Thale returns the favor <5HP>, though his blow connects for damage. The Automaton shudders and falls apart as did the first one, leaving a second pile of gears and cogs lying upon the floor, as well as bits of armor and other metal.

OoC: 430XP each
This includes the Orc-Zombie below and a bit for for RPing.
The Orc zombie was technically 1.5 CR, but I gave you XPs for 2.
The Automatons were toned-down from the entry in the MMII, so they were a CR 2 instead of a 3.

Edit: Velbrik's Feint wouldn't have altered the Combat, since the Automaton was facing Thurgan and wasn't watching Velbrik anyways. The poor thing wasn't very up for a sustained melee. As well, the Automaton had no Dex bonus, and wasn't susceptable to Feint, as it was a non-Intelligent monster. Good to see folks using their skills and abilities, though. The Feral Orcs (or whatever) will fall for them much easier, I suspect.

CLW heals 7HP on Velbrik.

Now that you have the time to look, you can clearly see the remains of two additional Automatons, one similar to each of those that you destroyed.
The stairs leading up are covered in blood, a medium sized-trail, as if one creature moved up, wounded.

Troi - Init: +3; AC: 16; HP: 9/12; Atk: Whip +2 (1d3+1)

"Hmm..." Troi says, seeing the bloody trail. "That'd probably be th' dwarf... if bringin' that dead orc up didn't take too long, then he coulda came back through here and gone upstairs... an' if he 'ad ta fight th' orc, he probably got wounded, too..." He shrugs. "Makes sense ta me. Probably won't be an orc up there, since there were still two a th' machines down here."

Troi heads up to the door at the top of the stairs (assuming there is one), and listens at it before he opens it. If there isn't a door, or if it's open, Troi stops halfway up the stairs and listens for anything moving before heading on.

Listen +6.

OoC:Room description recap. No, I hadn't originally mentioned a door, sorry.

Opening the door, you are met by light, as this chamber seems to be lit by several torches, Thale and Thurgan notice that this chamber seems to be a Living Room of sorts, with a fireplace (with coals burning low from the evening before) and half a dozen comfortable looking chairs as well as many small tables.
Thurgan sees blood here, a trail of it leading up the stairs at the rear of the chamber, ending in a stout reinforced oak door, iron stubs. As well, Thale has noticed a dead animal lying on the floor, a Crow, shot through by a crossbow bolt.Thale notes that the fletching on the crossbow bolt in the crow and the one that protruded from the orc Zombie had the same fletching as those that the Automaton used.
Felix notices something about the Crow...it has a small message tied about it's left leg. Opening it and reading;

Benthane,
Delmon here, I am beset by enemies, Orcs, though changed in some way.
They attacked early in the evening, after I had been doing some Imbuing on my latest Wand, thus I was low on ready-made defense spells.
They have breached my Tower.I am wounded sorely, by claw and by the foul Powers of a Cleric that they had with them,a Human, though changed and bestial as well.
My Automatons are keeping them at bay for now, but for how long,I know not...
I have retreated to my Bedchambers at the top of the Tower, Garasklig watches me now.
I am sending Rollo to you, he knows the safest route and hopefully, he will reach you in time to send aid.
Hurry, old friend.

-Delmon

Felix recognizes the name Benthane as one of the Wizards on the Coulcil in Orussus.

Troi begins to ascend the stairs...

Keeping his axe draw, Thale follows the ranger up the stairs.

After retrieving his crossbow, Thurgan hustled up the steps to the possible location of Delmon, eager to meet and help the dwarven wizard.

[Assuming Felix shows us the letter...]

"Most interesting," says Velbrik. "Perhaps it was shot down by the automatons, being instructed, most likely, to shoot at all that moves? And Delmon says he's at the top of this tower - we draw near, then."

Reaching the door, Troi finds that it is secured fast and will not budge.

"Well. Shall we knock, perhaps, or try to break through? The chances seem about equal for a favorable or unfavorable outcome with either."
