BTW I looked up Needle/I11 - it has smallish purple worms tunnelling on the moon.....great minds think alike..
HUH! It is totally possible I had heard of that and then forgot that the idea came from somewhere else but I've never read or played through that module. But yes, my mind is great. :p ;)
 

I made a campaign world once in which the planet itself had become uninhabitable, and so everyone lived on a few different moons. Dragons had been domesticated for space flight. Each moon was themed differently (big city moon, constant war moon, undead moon, etc), and adventurers would still head down to the planet to adventure amongst the ruins of ancient civilizations.

I don't think we ever got to play for a long time, but I remember it being one of my first big custom settings after getting into D&D.
 

Space: 1889 used the science fiction and science fantasy of the late 1800s to populate the Solar System. If you can find a Gazetteer, you might find something or other inspiring. IIRC, Mercury had rather Moon-like climate / environment, giving you more options to consider.
