Advice about BBB [OT] - trouble w/movers

KnowTheToe

First Post
I was wondering if anybody had any experience with filing claims with the BBB. Does it make a difference, how did it work?

I am in the process of moving and the moving company has charged me 1.5x what they quoted. They are storing my things until July and have said they refuse to deliver my belongings unless I pay. They have admitted the salesman mush have horribly misquoted, but will not compromise on their price. I have even offered to pay 1.2x the quoted price, which I think is overly generous, after all they are professionals and should know how to quote.

Looking for any advice

this kind of problem with movers is common, and a frequently reported on scam. several of the nightly news magazine shows have done specials on it.

do you have a contract? if so, your price should be good.

as for contacting the bbb, usually it just means tht if other people check they have a bad comment in their file :(

BBB doesn't usually help. They are usually best if you research the moving company ahead of time and find out if somebody has had problems with them in the past...

I would contact whatever your state's equivalent of the Department of Consumer Protection. I have had a few problems in the past, and both the NY and CT departments have been very helpful and quick to respond.

What do you have in writing? I'd almost wonder if you can contact the police to get your goods back -- this sounds like a combination of fraud and theft.

Would you mind posting the name of the company ,or if you dont want to do that, would you mind emailing it to me (my addres is in my profile)? I'm choosing a moving company from among several who gave us estimates this week and would like to avoid such a company.

thanks,
Ian

Thanks for the suggestion. I am going to visit these people in person on Friday morning and if that does not do it, then I will file a complaint.

if it makes any difference to you my wife and i moved using GRAEBEL 2 years ago. they moved our house and my studio quickly, efficiently and politely.

mind you, this was no small task, we are talking over 300 pieces of pottery and 100 artworks besides the studio house and barn. i have nothing but praise for their proffesionalism and conduct in the face of an awsome task :)

Despite the fact that the DMG clearly states that Boccobs Blessed Book "freely" accepts spells, I don't see any language that even HINTS that it somehow accepts these "claims" you are talking about. This item is already plenty powerful for it's 9,500 GP price and I see no need to broaden its use to allow people to file claims against businesses using it.

MUNCHKIN!

:D ;)

(Sorry, it's really the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title. My advice on the problem is to find out whether the movers are part of any professional organizations - The National Association of Movers or something like that. I've found that lodging complaints with those entities is often gets the best results. Losing a designation from such an organization is often more painful than a complaint filed with the BBB. Hope that helps.)
