After 20', does light just fizzle out?

Therefore, an elf standing just outside the range of the torch would be able to see clearly out to the 40 ft mark but then would be unable to see.[/B]

Clearly out to the 40 feet mark, and then like one half concealment for the next 20 feet.

There by completely invalidating Dark Vision unless there is no light source at all in a dungeon or new moon under heavy overcast conditions. The more I think on it the more I like having the light just end at the appropriate ranges for the type of vision the useable by the character/creature. It would be very difficult to keep track of where the different characters/creatures each can see and fight in a flowing battle. Much easier to just remember that from the source of the light you can see X distance and anything beyond that is total darkness. All things considered keeping things like this simple is more conducive to fun playing.

It certainly is easier.
However, after seeing it in gameplay, it is NOT more conducive to roleplaying OR fun. :(

It's really silly to be in combat with a opponent, then have your companion that has the torch move 5', and suddenyl your BLIND?!? LOL

We've all been in dark places with a light source.
You can easily distinguish forms and the like, unless there's NO light at all.
How well we could fight without the ability to distinguish appendages and such is questionable.

But we would definately know there is a body there...
