Age of Empires 3 - How Much Does It Differ From 1 & 2?

I am looking at gaetting some new PC games and am considering AoE 3. Exactly how much does it differ from the previous 2? Don't be afraid to give me spoilers.

It differed enough for me to not like it.
I like the AoE I & II, didn't really like AoE III though. Though I still play my AoE II all the time.

As far as reasons why, I think it was just not what I wanted. I like Classic Command & Conquer style or C&C Red Alert. Just nice and simple.

Think I still have my AoE III copy around somewhere, have to check when I get home.

They bought it out with the...

It's fully 3D, you can rotate the camera, zoom in and whole load of other crap that no-one uses!

I agree, C&C games were better in 2D. 3D is lame. AOE 1&2 far outshine 3. 3 has limited units - as in there are few different unit types, and you can't have many units in total. 3 has less building types & upgrades. 3 has a poor story arc. They should have followed 1 & 2's suite and kept away from a story. It really spoilt it.

The ONLY thing I liked about 3 was the ships. Headshots in DOOM3, Nukes in C&C or NOSin' it on carbon - none are as satifying as the sound of that full broadside when it's unleashed through your surround sub & speakers!!

I'm not reading the other replies yet. IT IS TERRIBLE!

I've logged more hours in AoE 1 and 2 than I care to even try to think about (doesn't help that it is resource-non-intesive enough to run on my work notebook)...AoE3 lasted maybe a week and a half before I deinstalled it.

Why? BORING!

They simplified the game, and made it more complex in useless ways. They pretty much added a new mechanic like Risk handing in cards for booster troops, which is the only neat thing, yet still majorly unrewarding. I'm sure you could turn on all technologies and play head to head online with friends and have fun, but just playing and advancing your city...boring and fairly unrewarding.

Pretty, sure. Sound, great. Overall I'd give it a 2 out of 5.
