Agh! 2nd Edition!

I'm about to play heretic, here...

First, see how the other players feel. Do they not mind it, or do they really mind it, and just don't want to say anything? If so, SPEAK UP! You are all there for enjoyment, and if you aren't going to enjoy what you play, then why play?

Then, if you find that you are the only one who doesn't mind, ask yourself one question: Do you honestly believe you could find absolutely no joy in a 2nd edition game? If yes, then you shouldn't play. Otherwise, I say give it a try. Don't play to act as a spoiler, or any such thing, but play in the style that the rest of the group wishes to.

As others have said, a good DM can alter a game to make it fun for all concerned. It's about give and take. Many people do not find happiness in the rules as written. Based on my correspondence with many players of first and second edition, most of them don't play exactly by the rules either! It's what we all did back then - I know of very few games that had little or no house rules. Everything from level limits, to encumbrance, to weapon speeds, to weapon vs. armor type, to initiative, has been screwed with. And if you work with the DM, and let him know what you want to do with your character, he can usually work this into the game rules to accomodate you.

Want a fast-talking conman who can handle himself in a fight? ask the DM. Want a Priest who can pick a lock and hide in shadows ever since he was twelve? Ask the DM. Want a transvestite wizard who is a priest of the god of magic, and knows the secret rituals of the cult of RuPaul? Ask the DM.

I've known many, many people who feel badly about 2nd edition since 3rd edition has been out. (An aside: I spoke with one of my players who wanted to run a "basic D&D game" - turns out he MEANT core rules 3rd edition. His specific comment was that he's NEVER going to play 2nd edition again. EVER.) It just isn't some people's cup of tea. But the game itself should be fun, regardless of what the system. ANd if the DM cannot change it to make all parties satisfied enough to enjoy playing it, THEN it's not worth playing.

Suggest that, rather than converting from 3rd to 2nd, your friend start a new game using 2nd and see how many people are interested. I wouldn't start with the attitude of intentionally wrecking a game. That's not cool and can lead to hard feelings in the future.

My brother was in one of his "cranky" moods and totally ruined what otherwise would have been an excellent adventure in the middle of a very lengthy campaign I was running. That was 15 years ago and still annoys me when the subject comes up (we still occassionally talk about the campaign to this day.) And I still think, as I told him that day long ago, if he didn't want to play he should have stayed home instead of ruining things for everyone.

Just my 2 cents.

no, it's not.

Hmmm... it's considered hilarious on Dragonsfoot, where the local clique is permitted by the moderators to slur you any way they like, and if you respond your posts are edited or deleted.

Not a friendly bunch, the twinks who run that board.

i bet it wouldn't be considered funny at any of the centers where i volunteer.

of course if anyone would like to explain to the folks i work with why it is funny i am sure they can drop by after physical therapy and before work training.

OR you could come by during lunch to help with feeding :)

maybe folks who find it funny could stick around and help explain to the parents of these people why it is funny to mock their intelligence. perchance you could find the time while helping to get everyone loaded on specially modified vans?

besides, retarded is a wide net. i think it would be unsafe to assume that noone who visits these boards is retarded. and at that point many would see it as a direct insult.

I'm behind al all the way. Mocking 3e is fine. Heck I often say that I only mock what I like. However, you must keep your mocks on topic and not unintentionally mock something you are not intending to.

Bravo.

I wouldn't "wreck" the game per se, but I would definitely do things to point out its flaws. Ask what a bugbear's strength is, and then use the ungodly unarmed combat rules to wrestle it. Be confused about THAC0 on purpose. Throw flesh to stone spells around willy-nilly, and then argue over whether the save should be vs spell or vs petrification. Ask for a rational in-game explanation of why a church would have both clerics and specialty priests. Carry around handfuls of pebbles to throw at stoneskinned casters.

And if all that fails, be a drow bladesinger.
