What I want to know is WHY?
that's the first thing i said when i heard the news. "Why?! Dear God, why?"

this probably stems from my experience watching the live-action 'Fist of the Northstar'. now that was awful

Damn American Hollywood crap.

Another Japanese masterpiece heading into the shredder we call it, "Let's screw Japanese Anime, American Style."

Why can't we American Hollywood Rodeo Drive jollies leave well enough alone?

Sorry. I'm frustrated by the English voice-dubbed Ultraman Tiga TV series with randomly stupid one-liners.

Am I the only guy who thought that Akira was a good idea saddled with bad animation and crappy Japanese style?

I'm excited about this... Akira the way that it was meant to be.

Down with Anime snobs- up with Hollywood quality!!!!

Alone? probably not.

In the minority? Certainly. At least until we can see what they are going to do with it. If it's just going to be another CGI heavy movie then what's the point?

IMO Anime serves a very legitimate purpose. It allows for action and violence that is not suited for children or for live action movies. The only movie that comes close to portraying the same kind of "look" that Anime conveys is the Matrix. Guess what? They were inspired by Ghost in the Shell and Ninja Scroll. Two of the best anime movies of all time. Not only that, as much as I love The Matrix (and I do) It doesn't hold up as well to repeated viewings as Akira or the others I mentioned above.

The only thing that Hollywood might be able to offer in a remake of Akira is perhaps a tighter script. but only if it's given to the right people. That's a mighty big if.

That is just one type of anime. Now anime does tend to have a 'magic' beyond film that if done well can be applied to any genre. I would REALLY recommend watching Beautiful Dreamer: Urusei Yatsura movie # 2 if you haven't yet. It is a fine example of this magic. I would also recomend the whole UY series too but that is another topic.

I am VERY worried about this Akira movie, it has great potential with proper treatment but also great risk of butcherd story and concept for a few oohs and AAAHS from the theater audience.

Would this director sell the soul of Akira for a bigger box office buck? we will see
