D&D 5E Al-Qadim Moving Through the Flame

"So this man claimed to be here for the tithe and started collecting money from the other caravan members. He looked a bit rough and I was going to intervene, thinking it was a protection racket, but luckily Akbar stopped me and explained - it's a tradition of collecting tithes along a pilgrimage road for maintenance and such. Some of the routes... if it wasn't for trade, the support along the way would collapse, but if it wasn't for pilgrims, the trade route wouldn't be viable either. The serrafs are the collectors - they have to be tough because it's a hard life, but also have keen judgement to see who can pay, and how much.

This dagger was probably a badge of office - or even his last name. Orphans who grow into the role can claim it as a family name"
.

Lal looks intently at Akilah and Salahudin "This was most probably an honorable man... so can it be done? Can the cloth be used for divination magic to trace the owner?"

"I am undercooked, if you wished to have me with bread and vegetables," Amina says with a little glint of humor in her eyes, "But I will heal."

She nods at Lal. "It's a good plan, if it will work."

"There's no way to truly identify him then? We know he was a good man, but we can't tell his family. Fate blows where it wills." Husam is quiet for a moment before continuing, "He deserves better than to be covered in sand only to be dug up by beasts. I'll go check on the caves to see if there is anything that can serve as a tomb that we can seal him in so he can at least be at peace. If the magic uncovers something or you need me, just call."

[SECTION]Nimar al-Solak, having checked on his rogues, draws close to your conversation, keeping a polite distance as if he were eavesdropping. However, his gaze is drawn to the western escarpment, brooding brows narrowing. After a moment, he steps forward offering a wry smile to the handmaiden Amina before leaning in to discretely whisper, "There may be a chance to learn more... There is a man or jinn just above the plateau. Flying."[/SECTION]

GM: Those of you with passive Perception 16+ (Amina & Akilah) can see a momentary silhouette against the night sky flying up just a few feet above the plateau to get a vantage point before sinking toward the plateau's edge and fading from view.

Others can attempt a Wisdom (Perception) check to see the figure, but a low roll risks tipping of the man or jinn that you can see it.

Without looking any direction but at Nimar, Amina chuckles and nods as if he'd just spoken something amusing.

"In a moment I will go to the camels, as if to fetch something. When I get there, have some kind of normal activity to get his attention. I'll get a closer look, though flight is beyond me."

Salahuddin fights the urge to look in the direction Nimar indicates. He did not want to risk alerting the watcher that he had been spotted. As Amina speaks her plan and mentions flight Salahuddin speaks.

"I can assist with that if you need to fly."

OOC: I can cast fly on you if you want.

A small chuckle escapes Akilah as Amina says, "I am undercooked, if you wished to have me with bread and vegetables," Amina says with a little glint of humor in her eyes, "But I will heal."
"Glad to hear you're ok.", she says solemnly.

Lal looks intently at Akilah and Salahudin "This was most probably an honorable man... so can it be done? Can the cloth be used for divination magic to trace the owner?"

"It is not my specialty, however, I may be able to whip something up."

Just then Nimar comes over and says, "There may be a chance to learn more... There is a man or jinn just above the plateau. Flying."
"Thank you Nimar, I must speak with you and your companions about the tomb, later of course." Looking to Amina, Akilah says, "Do you see them too?"

[sblock=OOC] Not familiar with clerics at all, so not sure if scrying would work off of just a piece of cloth.

GM: The Scrying spell by RAW only works on creatures that you have heard of, met, or know well...or on locations you have seen before.

Unless we decide to house rule how the spell works (for your PCs and the villains), you don't have enough to cast scrying on "whoever owned the clothing from which this scrap of linen was taken."

However Thateous once you do hear about this creature or meet it, then you would have enough to cast scrying. And furthermore the target's Wisdom save would have a -4 penalty as you have a physical connection to it in the form of a piece of its garment.

Scrying also requires a focus worth at least 1,000 gp, such as a crystal ball, a silver mirror, or a font filled with holy water.

Ooc: I was thinking of the various locate creature, object spells.

Lal's eyes widen when he hears of the watcher, and he too must make an effort to not look. He says under his breath. "Why thank you Nimar for the news. Now, let us entertain our guest".

With this, Lal kneels to the ground and begins drawing a map in the sand. He believed that this activity would captivate the watcher... and the best way to make a realistic map was to draw a real one. He drew from memory a battle he had with desert trolls.

"So the main trail was here, and the walid was here. The trolls were behind this hill here and..."

GM: Trying to help Thateous who is stationed and may not have easy access to books/internet.

Locate creature says that you: "Describe or name a creature that is familiar to you." Clearly wouldn't apply.

Locate object says that you: "Describe or name an object that is familiar to you." Seems like it could work to search for "The other half of this torn garment." I guess it would need a DM ruling, but that seems reasonable to me.
